R Madhavan’s GD Naidu biopic titled GDN; Krishnakumar Ramakumar to helm the project

Directed by Krishnakumar Ramakumar, GDN will be backed by Vijay Moolan's Varghese Moolan Pictures and Madhavan-Sarita Madhavan's Tricolour Films.

Actor-filmmaker R Madhavan is the man with the Midas touch when it comes to starring in biopics. In his directorial debut, Rocketry: The Nambi Effect, the actor played the titular role of ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan. The biopic won the National Award for Best Feature Film among other awards. Now, Madhavan is set to step into the shoes of the famous inventor and engineer, GD Naidu. On Tuesday, the makers announced the title of the film as GDN.

Directed by Krishnakumar Ramakumar, the movie will be backed by Vijay Moolan’s Varghese Moolan Pictures and Madhavan-Sarita Madhavan’s Tricolour Films. Sharing the first look poster of the film, the makers wrote, “Unveiling the title of our tribute to the Edison of India, GD Naidu. G.D.N – A story of innovation, resilience, and inspiration.”

Gopalswamy Doraiswamy Naidu was born in Coimbatore, and is credited with developing the first indigenous electric motor. He was known for his relentless quest for creating new things, and has made credible innovations in the field of agriculture, textile, photography, and automobiles. He was also a noted philanthropist, and acclaimed academician. Incidentally, a Ranjit Kumar-directed documentary on him, titled GD Naidu – The Edison of India, won the Best Science & Technology Film Award at the 66th National Film Awards.

GDN also boasts an interesting ensemble including actors like Jayaram, Priyamani and Yogi Babu. Actor-turned-filmmaker Krishnakumar Ramakumar has helmed a segment in Modern Love: Chennai, and this will be his debut feature film. With cinematography by Aravind Kamalanathan, the music of GDN will be composed by Govind Vasantha.
