AI or not? Audio clip shakes Jharkhand assembly sessionLeader of the Opposition Babulal Marandi

The Opposition BJP on Thursday accused the ruling alliance in Jharkhand of corruption and claimed to have an “audio proof” of it.

Speaking in the Assembly during the ongoing winter session, Leader of the Opposition Babulal Marandi claimed he had an alleged recording of a conversation between two Congress MLAs over “Rs 5 lakh commission” for getting a work done. He handed over a pen drive, containing the purported recording, to the Speaker.

In the purported recording, Marandi claimed, MLA Mamta Devi is accusing state Health Minister Irfan Ansari of taking a commission of Rs 5 lakh for issuing an NoC to a nursing college, and yet not processing the work. Both leaders are from the Congress, said Marandi.

“This is an extremely serious and dangerous situation,” Marandi said. “A legislator is accusing her own government’s minister of taking commission. I demand a forensic examination of this entire conversation and, if required, an inquiry by an appropriate agency.”

He said a thorough investigation would clarify whether the clip was AI-generated or genuine. “If it is AI, then there is no issue. But if it is not, then it must be examined what the (Congress) party members are talking about,” he said.

Distancing from the matter, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Radha Krishna Kishore called it an “internal issue” of the Congress. “The party’s top leadership is already looking into it. Discussing it in the House is not appropriate,” he said.

However, the Opposition continued its protest, pressing the Speaker for immediate intervention. The uproar prompted slogans in the House, leading to a brief adjournment of the proceedings.

Speaking to the media, Mamata Devi denied the allegations. She said she had no knowledge of any viral audio recording. “The audio is not mine. It is my responsibility to take the public’s health issues to the minister concerned, which I was doing, but the audio that the Opposition is talking about is a false claim. This is a conspiracy of the Opposition,” she said.

The Indian Express tried to reach out to the Health Minister, but no response was received.
