Ponniyin Selvan 2 box office collection Day 2: Vikram-Aishwarya Rai’s epic drama crosses Rs 100 crore mark globally
Ponniyin Selvan 2 box office collection Day 2: Mani Ratnam's magnum opus drama PS 2 earned a spectacular Rs 32 crore on its opening day, and has minted over Rs 100 crore internationally, according to its makers.

After opening to a mammoth Rs 32 crore, Mani Ratnam’s epic-drama Ponniyin Selvan 2 saw a dip on Saturday. On its second day, PS 2 earned approximately Rs 24 crore, as reported by industry tracker Sacnilk. This brings the two-day collection to Rs 56 crore. The website reported that on day 2, PS 2 had an overall 59.47% Tamil, 23.48% Malayalam, 34.63% Telugu and 14.42% Hindi occupancy.
While the domestic collection may have seen a drop, its global gross is said to be over Rs 100 crore, according to the makers. Its production house Lyca Productions shared a tweet on Sunday which read “Conquering hearts and box office alike! #PS2 garners over a 100 crore collection worldwide. #PS2RunningSuccessfully.”
The film stars Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha, Sobhita Dhulipala, Jayam Ravi, and Karthi, among others. It follows the Chola prince Arunmozhi Varman’s journey to becoming the renowned emperor Rajaraja I. While Ponniyin Selvan was originally intended to be a single film, it was split into two parts and was produced concurrently.
The first part of film, which is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Kalki Krishnamurthy, had got a humongous start when it was released in September 2022. It got the biggest-ever opening for a Tamil film as it made Rs 80 crore globally. Overall, it ended its run in theaters with a gross collection of more than Rs 500 crore worldwide, becoming one of the highest grossing Tamil movies of last year. Now, with positive word of mouth, PS2 is expected to have a successful run in cinemas as well.
Indianexpress.com’s Kirubhakar Purshottam gave the film a 4-star rating. A section of his review read, “In the age of green screens and visual effects, Ponniyin Selvan is one of the biggest achievements in Tamil cinema because it strives to be real. The film opens with a mesmerizing prologue, a flashback to Aditha Karikalan (Vikram) and Nandini’s (Aishwarya Rai) teen years. This scene needs imagination, and Mani Ratnam has that in oodles.”
