Pa Ranjith-Vikram’s Thangalaan is based on exploitation of Kolar Gold Fields by the British
Starring Vikram in the lead role, Thangalaan is set in the 19th Century Kolar Gold Fields. Like many of Pa Ranjith's previous films (except his debut Attakathi), the upcoming venture also deals with social oppression.

Thangalaan, starring Chiyaan Vikram, is one of Tamil cinema’s most highly anticipated projects of the year. The industry is looking forward to the release of the film, as 2024 has been an underwhelming year so far. Thangalaam, which was supposed to be released in January, was postponed to April due to the delay in the film’s visual effects work. Though a teaser has been unveiled, director Pa Ranjith has been tight-lipped about the project, and now, an official statement from the makers has confirmed that the film is based on real events.
While Yash’s blockbuster KGF explored the Kolar Gold Fields in the commercial space, Pa Ranjith’s film will bring a realistic perspective to the story, set during the 19th century, when the British exploited the region and the people there.
Set against this backdrop, Thangalaan, a periodic action drama, will explore the struggles faced by the indigenous tribes that suffered due to the mining.
Apart from Vikram, the movie also stars Malavika Mohanan, Parvathy, Pasupathi, Hollywood actor Daniel Caltagirone, and other prominent names from the Tamil industry. With its impressive budget, bankrolled by Studio Green, Thangalaan is poised to be released across India in multiple languages including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam.
With the music composed by GV Prakash Kumar, the film is slated for release in April 2024, as announced by the makers during Pongal.
