Udhayanidhi Stalin’s last movie, Maamannan, has ironically turned out to be his career best in terms of opening day collection. Directed by Maari Selvaraj, who is known for Pariyerum Perumal and Karnan, Maamannan has Vadivelu and Udhay playing the lead roles. The story revolves around a Dalit MLA and his son, who face an existential crisis after a life-changing incident that puts their lives and pride in jeopardy. According to reports, the film made about Rs 5.5 crore at the box office on the opening day, which is the best number in Udhay’s decade-old acting career.
In Tamil Nadu, the film had 57 per cent occupancy on Day 1, a significant number for a mid-size film like Maamannan. Apart from Tamil Nadu, the film also had a good response in Kerala and Karnataka, according to film trade analysts.
Meanwhile, the film has received mixed reviews from critics. The caste politics and the intention of the film have been applauded, but the second half of the film has left many disappointed as the screenplay doesn’t progress after the interval. Indian Express rated the film with 2.5 stars and called it, “The weakest film of Mari Selvaraj despite the director being unabashedly open about his political affiliations.”
Also starring Fahadh Faasil and Keerthy Suresh in prominent roles, Maamannan has music by AR Rahaman. The film is produced by Udhayanidhi Stalin’s Red Giant Movies. Udhay, the current Tamil Nadu Minister for Youth Welfare and Sports Development, confirmed that he will be focusing on his political career from now on.
On the other hand, Maari Selvaraj has already wrapped up his fourth film, which is titled Vaazhai. The release date and other details of the film are yet to be revealed.
