Lokesh Kanagaraj reveals his plans for LCU; shares final update on ‘Thalapathy’ Vijay’s Leo 2
Lokesh Kanagaraj recently shared his plans for the Lokesh Cinematic Universe aka LCU and the roadmap ahead.

(Images: Lokesh, Seven Screen Studio/Instagram)While India now has no shortage of film franchises — if anything, there’s an abundance — Tamil director Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU) stands out as a benchmark, with each film achieving iconic status and commercial success. The LCU began with Kaithi (2019), starring Karthi, and gained massive traction when Lokesh followed up with Vikram (2022), featuring Kamal Haasan, Vijay Sethupathi, Fahadh Faasil and Suriya; and the addition of “Thalapathy” Vijay’s Leo (2023) took the LCU to new heights. Though Vijay’s entry into politics and his subsequent retirement from cinema have impacted the franchise’s trajectory, Lokesh appears determined to see his vision through.
The director recently shared his plans for the franchise and the roadmap ahead. “The opening (first film) was so good. Now it’s structure is that there are only three films in the universe (so far). So, the fourth and fifth movies should be two basements, the sixth should be the pre-climax and the seventh or eighth should be the end. Going by that, I will get to do Kaithi 2, Rolex standalone and Vikram 2. If Vijay sir hadn’t announced retirement, I would have done Leo 2 as well. Then Leo 2 or Vikram 2 would have been the final film. That’s the maximum I can do with this universe,” he said during a chat with The Hollywood Reporter India.

During the chat, Lokesh also revealed that he has finished writing Kaithi 2. “I shared the idea with Karthi sir, the producers and my team; they are all excited. When it comes to Kaithi 2, it’s like my homeground. It all started there. So I’m very excited to bring back Dilli and unleash him on screen for his daughter. Now the characters have all grown older; it’s been six years. We don’t know what Dilli is doing and his girl must be studying in high school. It’s exciting to write. I’ve completed writing Kaithi 2, the rest are just ideas which I need to crack one at a time,” the director said, adding that he plans to start Kaithi 2 as soon as he completes his current project, the Rajinikanth-starrer Coolie, which is currently in production.
Opening up about the creative process behind expanding this film universe, Lokesh revealed that he has nothing more than just a scribbling pad that contains its crux and basic idea. “The entire universe is actually a collection of ideas on my scribbling pad,” he said. Reflecting on his younger years, he mentioned that he often wondered why no Indian helmers were building film universes like Marvel and DC. This curiosity led to the birth of the LCU, he added.
“Be it Marvel characters or DC’s, they all have superpowers; my characters don’t. They are very emotional and want to protect their families. What unites them is their desire to create a drug-free society. For this purpose, from the agency, you have Vikram, Bejoy and his boys and Amar. Then there are the lone wolves Dilli and Leo. They have support from Napoleon (George Maryan) and the few college students from Kaithi, who got stuck in the station and now work in IT. So, if I want to bring one person from one world to another, I just have to ensure logic, minimise cinematic liberty and do some writing,” Lokesh stated.
