Karthi opens up about why he and Suriya never worked together: ‘We are both…’
Despite their close bond, it comes as a surprise to many that Karthi and Suriya have never shared screen space in a film together.

Though the film industry in India has seen many star siblings, Suriya and Karthi hold a special place in the hearts of cinegoers. While being hailed for their talent, neither of the actors has given the impression that they rely on each other or exploit the other’s fame for personal advancement.
At the same time, they have consistently shown support and given shoutouts to one another. Notably, Suriya graced the stage during the trailer launch of Karthi’s recent film, Japan, directed by Raju Murugan.
Hence, it comes as a surprise to many that Karthi and Suriya have never shared screen space in a film together. The only instance of their collaboration was when Karthi served as an assistant director on Mani Ratnam’s political actioner Aayutha Ezhuthu, which featured Suriya and Madhavan in the lead roles.
During the latest episode of Ondraga Entertainment’s Uraiyaadal and Stuff, Karthi opened up to director Gautham Vasudev Menon about his bond with Suriya.
Mentioning that, despite his initial apprehension about acting alongside Suriya, they now view the prospect as a potentially wonderful shared experience. However, he acknowledged that the collaboration is being delayed due to both of them being “picky” actors. “It should be satisfying for both of us in terms of what their connection is and how these characters are going to be in the film,” he said.
The actor also recalled that RRR director SS Rajamouli shared an idea with Suriya long ago, mentioning that it would be good if both the brothers worked together on it. “But that sounded interesting for us because it fits into our zone. However, it didn’t take off.”
Karthi is currently working on a Nalan Kumarasamy film, in which he will share the screen with Krithi Shetty, Sathyaraj and Anandaraj. His last film Japan, which was released a few days ago, had failed to impress viewers.
In his review of the film, The Indian Express’ Kirubhakar Purushothaman wrote: “Japan is another example of the age-old statement: good intentions don’t make good cinema.”
