One of the biggest draws of the Tamil version of the globally famous Bigg Boss was undoubtedly the host Kamal Haasan. Seven years back when Vijay TV decided to bring a Tamil version to the show that was already a huge success in India thanks to the Hindi version hosted by Salman Khan, they needed a masterstroke of sorts to gain a faithful audience in Tamil. In what can only be compared to Amitabh Bachchan’s entry into the ‘small screen’ with Kaun Banega Crorepati, the makers of Bigg Boss Tamil brought in Kamal Haasan to host the show. After seven long years, Kamal Haasan shared the news that he was relieving himself of hosting duties of this reality show that he often called as a ‘mirror to the society.’
In a letter posted on social media, Kamal Haasan wrote, “With a heavy heart, I wish to inform you that I will be taking a small break from our journey that began 7 years ago. Due to prior cinematic commitments, I’m unable to host the upcoming season of Bigg Boss Tamil.” Kamal Haasan, who was recently seen in Indian 2 and Kalki 2898 AD, is working on Mani Ratnam’s Thug Life, and a yet-to-be-titled actioner with stunt choreographer duo Anbariv. Apart from his acting commitments, he also has his political career in the upswing, and this could also be a reason for him to stay away from the show that is set to begin soon.
Having used this platform to talk about his political opinions, Kamal reiterated the ‘privilege’ he had of being part of the audience’s homes, and said, “I have been privileged to reach you in your homes. You have showered me with your love and affection, for which you have my everlasting gratitude. Your Spirited and Passionate support of the contestants is at the core of what makes Bigg Boss Tamil one of the best television reality shows in India.”
While his seven seasons as a host of Bigg Boss Tamil received a lot of positive feedback, and its fair share of negative criticisms too, it did take him closer to a newer set of audience in the digital era. “Personally, being your host has been an enriching association, where I have honestly shared my learnings. I will always be grateful for this learning experience. I sincerely thank each one of you and the contestants in the show for our time together,” said Kamal Haasan, who managed to host almost every episode of the reality show except for a couple of weekends where he was replaced by Ramya Krishnan due to the former’s ill health. He also didn’t host the OTT version of the reality show, which was hosted by his Thug Life co-star Silambarasan TR.

“Lastly, I would like to thank the wonderful team at Vijay Tv, as well as every crew member who has been involved in making this enterprise a grand success. I am sure this season will be yet another success,” signed off Kamal.
With weeks left for the eighth season of the hit reality show, it would be interesting to see who would step into the huge shoes of Kamal Haasan. While the show is all about the contestants in the house, it is the weekend episodes featuring the host that truly sets the tone for the show. The makers of the reality show have their task cut out, and it would be no mean task to find someone to replace Kamal Haasan. But as they say, the show must go on.
