Producer SR Prabhu, who is known for making films like Kaithi and Joker, has said that the era of superstars in Tamil cinema is over.
SR Prabhu (L) and Rajinikanth (R) (Image: Twitter/SR Prabhu) At the audio launch of Rajinikanth’s upcoming film Kaithi, the superstar opened up about the title, calling it a problem. He revealed that he has asked directors to not call him superstar, but no one wants to remove it. Rajinikanth also said that there’s no superstar anymore as all the actors have their respective markets. Echoing the same opinion, producer SR Prabhu has said made a bold statement on Twitter, which said that the time of superstars is over.
He wrote, “The era of one superstar is over in the film business. Every star has his own market share and for each film, the value varies based on release date, content, combination, competition, etc.”
Prabhu also added that actors should help each other for their collective success in the industry. “The industry which understands this start to support each other, uplift the whole market and expand beyond boundaries. The recent best example is the Telugu industry. The stars, trade and fans in respective industries also have to understand this. I also hope this becomes a new norm everywhere and the whole Indian film industry rises to the best of standards including the trade and fans,” he said.

The response to the statement is mixed. While a sect agrees with SR Prabhu, many fans of Vijay and Rajinikanth have lashed out at the producer for the same. “This is a mature take. Nobody is bigger than the industry, nobody is bigger than the audience. Records are meant to be broken, stars are bound to be replaced. One who understands this reality and makes a move will thrive in the industry for longer,” wrote one user. “What exactly Thalaivar said yesterday,” wrote another.
