Not Kamal Haasan’s Vikram, Jailer’s Tiger Muthuvel Pandian is inspired by Mike Ehrmantraut from Breaking Bad

Nelson Dilipkumar is highly inspired by Breaking Bad. His upcoming film Jailer is highly reminiscent of Mike Ehermantraut character from Vince Gilligan's iconic series.

It is well-known that director Nelson Dilipkumar is highly influenced by the American series Breaking Bad, created by Vince Gilligan. Breaking Bad is about the gradual transformation of a high school chemistry teacher into a most formidable drug lord, Heisenberg, after he gets diagnosed with cancer. If the series is about this change of an individual to save his family, Nelson’s first film is about a whole family ‘breaking bad’ to help with the cancer treatment of the mother. Like Breaking Bad, Kolamaavu Kokila is also about how the lead character embraces the dark side. The film was an instant hit, making Nelson a talent to watch out for in Kollywood.

The story of Nelson’s Doctor might not be from Breaking Bad, but there were a lot of characters in the film that felt ‘inspired’ from the series. At one instant, Sivakarthikeyan’s character Dr Varun comes across as Gus Fring from Breaking Bad. He pretends to be a human trafficker with an ice cream parlour as the front to cover the illegal trade. In Breaking Bad, Gus Fring runs a drug mafia with a chain fast food restaurant named Los Pollos Hermanos as his cover. On top of that, Doctor also featured twins, who were inspired by Breaking Bad’s dreaded cousins Marco and Leonel Salamanca.

Now, with Jailer, Nelson seems to have written a story that’s based on Mike Ehermantraut from Breaking Bad and its spin-off Better Call Saul. Mike Ehermentraut (Jonathan Banks) is a man of few words, but his actions are on point. Now, look at the dialogue of Tiger Muthuvel Pandian in the Jailer showcase – “Oralavukku mela nammkitta pechae kedayaathu, veechu than (After a point, I don’t talk. I only slash).” It is not just the character traits, the stories of both Mike and Muthuvel Pandian are pretty much the same.

An alleged synopsis of Jailer was leaked online a few days ago, which claimed that Jailer is the story of a father avenging the death of his son, a police officer. Muthuvel Pandian, a former police officer, sets up a team with his old connections to take down the guys who were responsible for his son’s death. On top of that, he also has to protect his grandson. While fans have noticed the similarity between Jailer and Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Vikram, the source of the story is Better Call Saul.

Mike Ehrmantraut is a fixer in Breaking Bad, who works for Gus Fring. The taciturn veteran is known for his ingenious and deliberate plans. The spin-off of Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, explored his past in detail. Mike is a former corrupt police officer, whose son is also a cop. When two corrupt cops end up killing his son, Mike avenges his death by taking down the police officers. He later joins Fring only to save money for his grandson and daughter-in-law.

Thus, the similarities between Mike and Muthuvel Pandian are obvious. However, Nelson treads this thin rope that makes his works just inspiration and not an out-and-out copy. Even with Kolamaavu Kokila, though the story is similar to Breaking Bad, the treatment is entirely different from the tone of the American series. One can expect a similar treatment in Jailer, which is set to be released on August 10.
