Weeks after publicly accusing actor-filmmaker Dhanush of holding a personal grudge against her and her husband Vignesh Shivan, Nayanthara broke her silence about why she chose to pen a three-page-long post against her Naanum Rowdy Dhaan producer just days before the release of her Netflix documentary. In a recent interview, she expressed her disappointment in Dhanush for sending her a legal notice, demanding Rs 10 crore and keeping her and Vignesh at bay by not issuing a No Objection Letter for a four-line song from the 2014 film. “After a point, we didn’t want the NOC or footage, I just wanted to clear things up, but he never spoke,” said the actress.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, the actress explained her decision behind penning the long note against Dhanush, whom she thought was a “friend,” and “would be the first one to agree” to let her use the song for her Netflix documentary. She said, “It was never meant to be a controversy, and it was never meant to be put out at that particular time when we were about to release the (Netflix) film. His fans thought it was a publicity stunt, but that was never in our mind. The legal notice came in just before the release, and we had to retaliate.”
It all began after Dhanush’s production company, Wunderbar Films, filed a lawsuit against Nayanthara and her husband Vignesh Shivan, and their production house Rowdy Pictures, accusing them of using unauthorised BTS footage from Naanum Rowdy Dhaan in the documentary. The lawsuit was filed after the release of the documentary’s trailer.
“The only thing we wanted in the film was those four lines. They meant a lot to us, as they summed up our life, our love, our kids. It was very personal. But when that didn’t happen, we were okay with not using the lines. We didn’t get the NOC. We moved past that,” she said.
Amid all this chaos, Nayanthara tried to reach out to Dhanush personally and clear things up. “I spoke to his manager, which I usually don’t do. I told him it’s okay if you don’t give the NOC. It’s his call, it’s his film. But I just wanted a phone call with him to understand what the issue was. Why was he angry at us. Where did the misunderstanding start. I wanted to clear the air. We didn’t have to be the best of friends, but I wanted to at least be able to say ‘hi’ if we saw each other in the future.” But Dhanush never spoke.
“I was not angry at him, I moved past it. We decided not to use the clips. Vignesh even wrote new lyrics for us. But when the trailer was released, a BTS footage from the film came under scrutiny again,” she said.
Nayanthara explained, “People don’t understand that BTS is only a part of a contract now. This was not the case 10 years ago. These were random videos taken on our phones and the phones of others in the crew. It wasn’t official footage. For someone like Dhanush, who is so respected by his fans and peers, I thought he would just let it go. But when the trailer came out, the issue was blown out of proportion. It felt unfair, and I had to speak out.”
Justifying her decision to go all out about the issue on social media, Nayanthara said, “I only have to be scared when I’m fabricating something. If I’m not doing that, I don’t have to be scared. If I didn’t speak out now, when things had already gone too far, I don’t think anyone would have the courage to stand up for themselves ever again.”
In November, Nayanthara in her long note against Dhanush on Instagram wrote, “The vengeance that you have been festering against the film, my parent, and I, doesn’t just affect us but the people who have given their effort and time towards this project.” She questioned the actor’s character and said, “I wish you were half the person you portray to be on screen.”
She also shared, “I have not forgotten all the horrible things that you said about the film. The words you said pre-release have left some unhealable scar to us already.” Nayanthara further slammed Dhanush’s ego.
