India’s first Formula One driver, Narain Karthikeyan, has joined hands with Tamil superstar Ajith for the upcoming Asian Le Mans Series. The two will race together, and if they win, the team will qualify for the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans in France.
Speaking at an India Today event, Narain opened up about Ajith and the story behind their partnership. Calling the actor “down to earth,” he recalled Ajith’s incredible fan following even on the race track. “He announced that he was racing in the Porsche Super Cup at the Dubai Autodrome. That track had never seen a crowd like that before—50,000 people cheering for him,” Narain shared.
The idea of racing together first came up during a dinner in Dubai last year. “Ajith spoke about creating a truly Indian team with Indian drivers. Initially, I brushed it off, but six months later he called me again and said, ‘Let’s do this,’” Narain Karthikeyan revealed.
Though their racing partnership is new, the bond between the two goes back to the early 2000s, when Narain was competing in Formula Two. Ajith, known for his passion for motorbikes and aeromodelling, often sought tips from Narain about tracks in England. “That’s when I realised he was very genuine and deeply committed to motorsport.”

Ajith has been rigorously preparing for the Asian Le Mans Series, which kicks off in December at Sepang, Malaysia, followed by a race in Abu Dhabi. Praising the actor’s dedication, Narain Karthikeyan said: “The last 18 months he’s put in a lot of effort into his driving. He’s talented, but like all drivers, he’s had his share of incidents. Now he has become a much better and more competitive driver.”
Sharing his excitement to race alongside the actor, Narain said, “He’s easy to get along with, eager to learn from professionals, and genuinely committed to building something for Indian motorsport. I’m really looking forward to this journey.”
