The stunning action sequence in Action Jackson with Ajay Devgn fighting with his adversaries in the forefront, and a factory on fire in the backdrop was not computer generated, but was actually shot live. Action director Ravi Verma, who directed the sequence and shot it over 25 days, says that fire sequences are the most difficult to shoot. Besides the conception, which in this case took six months to perfect, there are several precautions which have to be taken when filming a fire sequence This includes having a fire extinguisher,an ambulance and a doctor on the sets. Then there is the smoke and heat that the actors have to deal with.
“The actors and stunt directors rub a fire gel on their bodies before the shoot so that the effect of the heat is minimised. As soon as a shot is canned we have to put the fire off. And there’s the smoke to deal with. It’s a tedious and difficult process.,” said Verma.
Talking about the spectacular flames one can see in the sequence, Verma revealed how special sticks from the South were used for this effect. “The sticks are made from the wood of coconut trees, and three months before we were to shoot the scene, we got the wood which was then dried and then cut into sticks. During the fire sequence, we light up the sticks and throw them wherever required. If we were to use sticks made from normal wood, it would not have the required effect. The flames ,when you light these sticks, are larger and brighter and look very striking. We used 400 of them sticks for the climax scenes,” explained the action director.
Action Jackson, which also stars Sonakshi Sinha, Yami Gautam and newbie Manasvi Mamgai, releases on December 5. Directed by Prabhu Dheva, it is produced by Gordhan Tanwani and Sunil Lulla.
