Mohanlal reacts to Barroz’s box office failure after film collects Rs 9 cr in 6 days: ‘Not made for the numbers’
Mohanlal's Barroz has performed poorly at the box office. The legendary actor spoke about the film's under-performance.

Veteran Malayalam actor Mohanlal recently made his directorial debut with the big-budget adventure film Barroz, which was filmed in 3D and took over half-a-decade to produce. Barroz earned mixed reviews, and under-performed at the box office upon release. Reportedly made on a budget of Rs 150 crore, Barroz has managed to earn only Rs 9 crore in six days. Recently, while talking to India Today, Mohanlal reacted to the film’s poor commercial performance, and shared that he didn’t make it for the money.
Mohanlal said, “We have released only 3D prints, and that was the best decision. People ask, ‘Why didn’t you also have a 2D [version]?’ But why should we? People should enjoy this experience first, and if it’s necessary, we have 2D prints available as well. So, this is not for the number or the money. I want to make something and give it to the audience. This is a gift for them, for their respect and love for the last 47 years. I have given a children-friendly film that families can watch together. It will also tickle the child in you.”

Talking about Barroz, Mohanlal further added, “We have shot the film with stereo lenses, which is not an easy thing. Working on 3D films comes with its own set of challenges. Every aspect of filmmaking is different. As I said, camera work, lighting, editing, sound design, artwork, makeup, costume. And the way of storytelling, the camera movements, everything. You should be careful. This film is my humble offering to the audience and the industry. That has been my home for the last 47 years.”
Sharing that the film has been in the works for six years, Mohanlal said, “This is an association of great actors and great technicians. We tried something different nobody has attempted. It’s not a challenge but a new experience for the audience.”
Barroz has been released in multiple languages; a dubbed Hindi version was released on Christmas.
