For Malayalees across the world, Mohanlal and Mammootty are like their two eyes. Yes, one can function with just one, but together, they make the world seem far more vibrant and life more fulfilling. Having made their acting debuts in credited roles around the same time, Mohanlal and Mammootty have dominated the Malayalam film industry for nearly four decades, with no real competition in sight even now. Yet, despite their parallel journeys, their friendship has remained strong and unwavering since their early days in the industry.

Just recently, Mohanlal performed a special offering for Mammootty during his visit to the Sabarimala temple in Pathanamthitta, Kerala, which further highlighted their camaraderie. Though he did it privately, a photo of the offering’s receipt soon surfaced online and quickly went viral, drawing admiration from fans and industry peers alike.

“We’ve been working together for the last 45 years and we’ve done more than 55 films. He’s like a brother to me. We share everything. Our families are well-connected. I was in Sabarimala and I just thought of him and offered my prayers. It’s just that somebody there saw the receipts and published this news. The Malayalam film industry is very close-knit and we treat each other like family,” Mohanlal said during a chat with News18.

Actor-filmmaker Prithviraj Sukumaran also talked about the two legends’ dynamic, revealing that while Mammootty is known for his discipline and strict household rules, Mohanlal is the only person for whom he makes exceptions. “In Mammootty sir’s house, there are some very strict rules about what you can and cannot do. He’s that kind of a person. And he breaks those rules only for one person and that’s Mohanlal sir. He doesn’t even do it for his own family. But I’m not going to say what those rules are (laughs),” Prithviraj added.

On the professional front, Mohanlal is currently gearing up for the release of L2: Empuraan, directed by Prithviraj, while Mammootty’s next project is Bazooka, an action thriller helmed by debutant Deeno Dennis. Meanwhile, the Big Ms are also reuniting on screen after 17 years for a highly anticipated film, tentatively titled MMMN, directed by Mahesh Narayanan.
