Mohanal reveals why he and Mammootty aren’t insecure about doing films together, unlike Bollywood stars reluctant to do ‘two-hero’ projects
Mohanlal spoke about the deep bond that he shares with Mammootty and his family, and said that they recently started working on a new film together.

The veteran Malayalam star Mohanlal opened up about his close relationship with his contemporary, the equally illustrious Mammootty. He said that they’ve known each other since before they became stars, and that their children grew up together. They don’t feel a sense of competition with each other, and that’s why they’ve done so many films together. Mohanlal was asked about this in the context of Hindi movie stars being hesitant about doing ‘two-hero’ films.
In an interview with Galatta India, when Mohanlal was asked what makes him and Mammootty different from the Bollywood stars who refuse to share the screen with each other, he said, “We started a film last month also. There is nothing called stardom. We had the chance of doing a film with grey characters; doing 55 films together, it’s not a small number. In the Malayalam industry, to accommodate these two stars is not easy, that is why he’s doing his films and I’m doing my films.”
He continued, “We’re in touch. Our families are in touch. Our children grew up together. We don’t have any competition. Not only with Mammooty, but with any other actor.” In a recent interview with Suhasini Maniratnam, she recalled how surprised her husband was to see Mammootty treating Mohanlal’s son like his own. “Mani once went to Mammootty’s house (then in Chennai) to narrate a story. While they were talking, a boy came near them and Mammootty picked up a stick and chased him away. When Mani asked who it was, Mammootty replied, ‘It’s Pranav, Mohanlal’s son.’ Mani was shocked to see Mammootty treating Pranav like his own son,” Suhasini shared during an interview with Mohanlal on Galatta Tamil.
Mohanlal and Mammootty are set to reunite after 16 long years in a high-profile new film tentatively titled MMMN, directed by Mahesh Narayanan and also featuring Fahadh Faasil and Nayanthara. Mohanal recently made his directorial debut, the big-budget 3D film Barroz, which has been under-performing at the box office after debuting on Christmas Day.
