Barroz box office collection Day 1: Mohanlal’s big-budget directorial debut opens with a mediocre Rs 3.6 crore, Malaikottai Vaaliban made more
Barroz box office collection Day 1: Mohanlal's directorial debut gets a mediocre opening of Rs 3.6 crore. The film is facing competition against Mufasa, Pushpa 2.

Barroz box office collection Day 1: Mohanlal’s directorial debut Barroz, which was released on Christmas Day, has had a mediocre opening at the box office, especially for a holiday release. On the first day, the film made Rs 3.65 crore, as per industry tracker Sacnilk. It has been rumoured that the film has been made on am estimated budget of Rs 100 crore, which is fairly high for a Malayalam film and this makes the opening figure even more disappointing.
On day one, Barroz witnessed 57.22 percent Malayalam occupancy. The film had 127 shows in Kochi with 68.75 percent occupancy and 114 shows in Thiruvananthapuram with 52.5 percent occupancy. The film’s opening is much lower than that of Mohanlal’s previous release, Malaikottai Vaaliban, which opened at Rs 5.65 crore, but could only make around Rs 14 crore at the domestic box office.
Barroz is facing competition against Mufasa: The Lion King, which has been released in multiple languages in India, and Pushpa 2: The Rule, which is still going strong in its third week.

2024 has been a rather successful year for Malayalam cinema, as Manjummel Boys made over Rs 130 crore at the domestic box office despite opening with just Rs 3.3 crore. Aadujeevitham – The Goat Life, starring Prithviraj Sukumaran, opened with Rs 6.55 crore, and eventually went on to make around Rs 77 crore in India. Aavesham, starring Fahadh Faasil, opened with around Rs 3.65 crore but went on to make Rs 85 crore in the domestic market. But, all these films had positive reviews going in their favour, which might not be the case with Barroz. The 3D film has received largely negative reviews, and it appears that this could hamper the film’s release in the ongoing holiday season.
Barroz is Mohanlal’s first film as a director, and the actor has already declared that he will not be making any more films. In a chat with Galatta Plus, Mohanlal also shared that he wrote to Hans Zimmer for making the music of the film but that did not pan out. “I wrote a letter to Hans Zimmer and asked him if he could do this film. He replied that he didn’t have much time. Eventually, some of Hans Zimmer’s musical players are playing in this film,” he said.
