Sonic The Hedgehog 3 movie review: Jim Carrey returns in an unsurprising sequelSonic the hedgehog 3 hit the theatres on January 3

This is the third film based on the video game series in four years. That, has stopped being a surprise. Jim Carrey, who has proclaimed himself otherwise retired, has acted in all three; and is this time in a tiresome double role. That, will never stop being a surprise.

Between these two hard truths lands Sonic the Hedgehog 3, where streaks of lightning assault your optic nerves with other steaks of lightning, the Earth gets saved though a lot of other things (including a part of the Moon) do get blasted, and, along the way, we learn about “making the right choices”, “opting for love over revenge”, and “being a part of families and teams”.

To weave all this into a comprehensible whole is a challenge even for films that are trying much harder than this one is. Sonic 3 is content coasting along throwing everything here, there and everywhere, hoping something will stick – and be forgotten soon enough if it doesn’t.

As mad scientists, crazy professors, gun-happy forces abound, it is difficult to keep track of who is after whom and why, what follows what, and when. But then again, Sonic 3 doesn’t really care.

With the film strictly for fans of the video game series, or of anthropomorphic creatures who walk and talk like wise-cracking Hollywood heroes, others going into Sonic 3 be warned: ‘Happy Bearth Day’, playing on both ‘birth-day’ as well as the day Sonic landed on Earth, is the extent of its wit.

And should you chuckle enough, you may have yourself a Sonic 4.
