Oppenheimer box office collection Day 5: Chritopher Nolan’s film zooms past Rs 60 crore mark; India the third-largest market in the world
Oppenheimer box office collection Day 5: Within five days of its release, Christopher Nolan's film has zoomed past the Rs 60 crore mark and is still seeing a steady footfall at the ticket counters.

Christopher Nolan’s biographical drama Oppenheimer has been having an extraordinary run in India, which is among the top three markets in the world for the film. Within five days of release, the film has zoomed past the Rs 60 crore mark, and is still seeing a steady footfall at the ticket counters. Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, which was released on the same day, is performing counter-programming duties, but trailing the film by a wide margin in India. Although the roles are reversed on the global stage.
On Tuesday, the Cillian Murphy-led drama earned Rs 6.25 cr (early estimates), bringing the total collection of the movie to Rs 62 crore, reported Sacnilk. The film started its theatrical run with Rs 14.50 cr, which was followed by Rs 17 cr on day two, and Rs 17.25 cr on day three. On its first Monday (day four), it added another Rs 7 cr to its collection. Internationally, the film has amassed $209.2 million, according to Box Office Mojo.
Globally, Oppenheimer is trailing Barbie, which has earned $382.4 million. Barbie’s total collection (Rs 23.25 cr), in the first five days, is less than half of Oppenheimer’s total collection (Rs 62 cr) in the country until now. As per a Mint report, India is the third largest market for the biographical drama, after North America ($82.40 million) and the UK ($14 million).
Oppenheimer presents the story of the celebrated American physicist Robert J. Oppenheimer, the man who was the charge of the Manhattan Project in the 1940s, which resulted in the creation of the world’s first atomic bombs. These were the bombs that were dropped over Hiroshima and Nagasaki, effectively ending World War II. The film also stars Matt Damon, Emily Blunt and Robert Downey Jr.
However, Oppenheimer is also in discussions in India for a controversial moment in which the titular character reads out verses from an ancient Sanskrit scripture, purportedly the Bhagavad Gita, during an intimate scene. Reportedly, I&B Minister Anurag Thakur has demanded answers from the CBFC about how the scene was retained in the movie.
