Robert Downey Jr’s exit as Iron Man from MCU in the 2019 film Avengers: Endgame was extremely emotional. The actor’s most-loved character Iron Man aka Tony Stark died in the movie, and with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige making it clear that he had no interest in messing with Downey’s emotional exit, there was no hope left in fans to see the actor return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
However, at the San Diego Comic Con, the Marvel panel dropped a bomb when it was revealed Robert Downey Jr will return to the MCU as Doctor Doom for Avengers 5. While this took the fans by surprise, the one person whose reaction was noteworthy was that of Robert’s co-star Gwyneth Paltrow.
Gwyneth, who has acted in the MCU as Pepper Potts had a rather confused reaction to the announcement, mirroring many of the fans. Responding to Robert Downey Jr’s post where the actor shared photos of himself with the mask of Doctor Doom and announced the news on his Instagram handle, Gwyneth asked a question which was on the minds of many of the fans.
Gwyneth who was confused with the news commented, “I don’t get it, are you a baddie now?” The actor’s comment had several reactions from netizens who manifested her return. One of the users replied to her comment and said, “Maybe you should come back and stop him.” Another user replied, “He needs Pepper to show him the way back to the good side, can you?”.
Doctor Doom is one of the famous characters from Marvel Comics, created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. The character first appeared in The Fantastic Four in 1962. Doctor Doom is depicted as the monarch of Latveria whose goal is to bring order to humanity through world conquest. He serves as the archenemy of Reed Richards and the Fantastic Four. The character has also come into conflict with other superheroes in the Marvel Universe, including Spider-Man, Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, X-Men, and the Avengers. Though the character is mostly portrayed as a villain, he has also been an ally at times, working with heroes if their goals align and only if it benefits him.
However, its not just Gwyneth, but many of Robert Downey Jr and Iron Man fans, who have a mixed feeling about the casting. A fan commented on the actor’s post, “I’m so pissed off and in shock right now. How can they turn my Superhero into a super villain. This is so not right. I need time to accept this.”
Another fan wrote, “I wish they could’ve actually kept this a secret but yeah I’m having mixed feelings and emotions.” “I want iron man back”, is the wish of many others.
On Sunday, in a dramatic ceremony, Robert Downey Jr was introduced as Doctor Doom. The stage was occupied by men in olive robes and metal Doctor Doom-like masks. Introducing the character, Joe Russo said, “If we’re going to do this … then we are going to need the greatest actor in the world. As proof of the unimaginable possibilities of the Marvel Universe, we give you the one person who could play Victor von Doom…” Soon, one of the masked men stepped to the centre and took off his mask, revealing Robert Downey Jr.
