Kites release stopped in Bangalore
Screening of the Hrithik Roshan starrer Kites was stopped in Bangalore following a protest by members of the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce.
Screening of the Hrithik Roshan starrer Kites was stopped in Bangalore following a protest by members of the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce who said that the film’s distributors had violated KFCC norms.
“Big Cinemas, distributors of ‘Kites’,have violated the KFCC norm of screening other language films in 21 theatres by releasing the movie in 46 theatres in South Karnataka,” KFCC President Basant Kumar Patil said.
“We have stopped the film’s screening in all theatres in Bangalore and by evening the same will be done throughout South Karnataka including Mysore,Davanagere and Mangalore, unless the distributors agree to our conditions,” he added.
About 60 KFCC members led by Patil, who were protesting against the film’s screening, were taken into custody, police said.
Yesterday the Film Chambers had directed exhibitors not to screen the film but they had defied it today, leading to the protest.
According to the chamber, violation of its norms would be detrimental to the interests of Kannada films which would find it difficult to get screens.
The formula of allowing release of non-Kannada films in not more than 21 theatres–17 in Bangalore and four outsidewas worked out in 2004 when the Kannada film industry complained of non-availability of screens for its movies because of blockbusters from Hindi and Telugu and Tamil movies.
