The Himachal Pradesh Cabinet on Saturday decided to extend the terms of mayors and deputy mayors of municipal corporations from two-and-a-half years to five years, invoking a sharp reaction from Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur who said the Congress government was trying to evade the mayoral polls and was running away from the people’s verdict.

The Cabinet decision, taken in a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, will benefit Shimla Mayor Surinder Chauhan and Deputy Mayor Uma Kaushal, both of the Congress, whose two-and-a-half-year term is expiring in November. They were elected to the post in July 2023.
