Superstar Aamir Khan was almost on board to star as the antagonist Rahul Mehra in Yash Chopra’s 1993 thriller Darr, but turned the project down, making way for Shah Rukh Khan to step in and make the part iconic.
Darr also starred Sunny Deol and Juhi Chawla and followed the story of her obsessive stalker (Khan), who wreaks havoc in the couple’s lives. Darr was a milestone film for Shah Rukh Khan, who reached a wider audience with his menacing lover boy turn, earning praise for his act.
But before he was on board, it was Aamir Khan, who was considered for the same part by Yash Chopra. In an interview with Sushma Dutt in Vancouver at the time, Aamir, who was touring Canada then, had revealed why he let go off the film despite liking the story.
“Yash Chopra is a very good director. I have worked with him on Parampara and was very keen on working with him again. But, I have a principle, or you could say a policy, that if I’m working on a film with two heroes or more on one hero, I request the director for a joint narration. I prefer the director to narrate the story to both heroes together,” he had said.
Aamir recalled his comedy film Andaz Apna Apna co-starring Salman Khan and said both of them had received a joint narration for the film. “This approach ensures that both of us are satisfied with our roles and helps prevent any issues later on. This is how I like to work. But in this case, it was not possible. Yash ji did not feel that he should give a joint narration. On that basis, I was removed from the project.”
Though Aamir couldn’t be a part of Darr, costume designer-turned-producer Shabina Khan had earlier revealed how it was him who had recommended the film to Shah Rukh at Salman’s Eid party.
“Aamir Khan, SRK, Gauri, and I were standing in Salman’s compound when Aamir told Shah Rukh about a narration he heard the previous day. Though he refused the film, he strongly thought that Shah Rukh was perfect for the role and urged him to call Yash Chopra for the same. The film was Darr, and in that one casual conversation Aamir literally handed over Yash Chopra and Yash Raj banners to Shah Rukh,” Shabina Khan had said in an interview with Notch magazine in 2013.
After Darr, Shah Rukh went on to work with both Yash Chopra and his filmmaker son Aditya Chopra for their banner Yash Raj Films in movies like Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenga, Dil To Pagal Hai, Mohabattein, Veer Zara, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and Jab Tak Hai Jaan.
