War 2 trailer out: War 2, starring Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR, Kiara Advani, dropped its trailer on Friday morning. The trailer opens with Hrithik’s Kabir declaring that he has vowed to live in the shadows all his life, for his country. Jr NTR’s character declares that he will make himself capable of doing things that no one else can. One might have imagined that Hrithik would be the one fighting for his country, and Jr NTR would be playing the villain, they both declare, “India first.”
The trailer is packed with action filled visuals and stunts but the makers have been quite cautious about not revealing anything about the plot here. Tiger Shroff makes an appearance in a photograph as Hrithik’s character remembers his martyrdom. Kiara Advani also makes an appearance in the trailer and at first, it looks like she is playing Hrithik’s love interest, but we gradually learn that she too, is an army officer in the film. The actor’s bikini shot from War 2 teaser, which made her trend, finds a place in the trailer too. However, it’s clear that she has a bigger role as compared to Vaani Kapoor in the first iteration. Tiger Shroff, who died in the line of duty in War, also gets a tribute of sorts in the film. Ashutosh Rana, who was a significant part of the first War film, returns here as he reminds the viewer, “This is war.”
The trailer ends with Hrithik and Jr NTR reciting a shloka from Bhagvad Gita. As per the Hindu text, the lines were said by Lord Krishna before the battle of Kurukshetra to Arjun, as he prepared for a war against his brothers.
Directed by Ayan Mukerji, War 2 is a part of YRF’s Spy Universe that came into being after the release of Shah Rukh Khan’s 2023 film Pathaan. YRF decided to include all the older Tiger films, and the first War, as a part of the universe. This makes War 2 the sixth film of the universe. While SRK’s Pathaan and Salman Khan’s Tiger have made appearances in each other’s films, Hrithik’s Kabir is yet to cross paths with them. It is yet to be seen if Tiger and Pathaan will appear in a cameo in this film
War 2 is hyped to be the biggest action film of the year but after the release of Mohit Suri’s Saiyaara, starring newcomers Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, it remains to be seen if large scale action can still entice movie goers. The wave of action films in Hindi cinema exploded after the humungous success of Pathaan, which was followed up by the success of films like Jawan, Animal, Gadar 2, where the action pieces became the center pieces of the film. However, films like Baby John, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, which also highlighted their action pieces, failed to get the same kind of attention.
For director Ayan Mukerji, War 2 is his next film after the much hyped Brahmastra. His film with Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt was in the making for almost seven years and was designed to be a trilogy. However, soon after the first part released, and reportedly made Rs 267 crore, on a budget of Rs 410 crore, the franchise was bought by Jio. After Ayan took over the directorial duties of War 2, he said that the sequel of Brahmastra was on hold for now.
War 2 releases on August 14.
