Wamiqa Gabbi had doubts about getting a lead role after working with Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor in Jab We Met: ‘Their parents already worked in the films..’

“I used to regularly talk to Imtiaz Ali through emails. I was just a small kid. I went up to him with an autograph book and he wrote a few things in my diary. He wrote, ‘Finish your studies Wamiqa then come to Bombay but first finish your studies. He also gave me his email id,” the actor shared.

After Jab We Met, Wamiqa started sending emails to Imtiaz every two months. “I was in the eighth standard. So, like a kid, I would send him emails saying, ‘Hello Imtiaz sir, how are you? How has the film come out? Are you happy?’ I used to send one email in two months.” As per the actor, Imtiaz called her another chance in Love Aaj Kal only to give her the experience of being on a film set.

Further, Wamiqa revealed that though she was just in school when she did Jab We Met, she found herself inclined towards becoming an actor after it.

“It was on the sets of Jab We Met that I got the ‘keeda’ of acting. Though it was a bit of a negative thought about if I will ever be able to play a lead role like Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor since both of them had parents who have already worked in the films. At that time, I used to think, ‘Will I ever be a leading lady?’ And, I was in 8th class,” shared Wamiqa.

However, Wamiqa said she will always be grateful to Imtiaz Ali for giving her an experience of a film at an early age.

Wamiqa Gabbi was born and raised in Chandigarh in a Punjabi joint family. An alumnus of Chandigarh’s St. Xavier’s Senior Secondary School, Wamiqa went on to star in Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam films after featuring in small roles in Jab We Met and Love Aaj Kal. She also impressed the viewers with her performance in the Disney+ Hotstar series Grahan.
