Tiku Talsania, an actor who’s been part of some of the most rib-tickling comedies like Andaz Apna Apna, Coolie No. 1 and heart-aching dramas like Devdas, is now seen in the one of its kind Gujarati web series What The Fafda.

With almost 200 films under his belt, the veteran actor says he has more to offer and is trying to fit into the ever-changing film industry. In this interview with indianexpress.com, Tiku shares that after working for so long, he is “slightly jobless,” and still giving auditions in search of good roles.

On being a part of What The Fafda,  Tiku Talsania says, “I am basically a Gujarati. I love my language and I love to propagate it. I have been doing Gujarati theatre for a very long time. In fact, I started my career with Gujarati plays, so I thought it was the right time for me to try the long format as well, so here I am, in What The Fafda.”

In his career of 39 years, Tiku has proved his versatility with varied roles. However, he’s most popular for his comedy roles in films like Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin, Bol Radha Bol, Andaz Apna Apn, Ishq, Jodi No.1 and Partner, among others. He also played Shah Rukh Khan’s guardian Dharamdas in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas. However, Tiku says while he feels happy with the journey he’s had as an actor, there is a certain detachment with the work he’s done in the past.

He says, “I actually don’t look back. I just take on work as it comes and I keep on moving ahead. But yes, I have had a great time. I’ve been lucky. I’ve enjoyed my time so far, and I hope to keep enjoying my work, keep the show on.”

Tiku Talsania then shared that while he keeps himself busy by doing Gujarati plays and a few films here and there, he is finding it difficult to get work at the moment. “I have not stayed away, but I should get a film. I should have a role in a film that suits me. Of course, I like to work. It is not like I’m taking retirement or something, but role toh milna chaahiye na (but I should get some offers). There are no roles, so how do I do it?,” he shares.

Tiku revealed that he’s “slightly jobless” at the moment, and looking for work actively. “Gone are the times where there used to be formula films with cabaret dance, two love songs, and the comedian coming and doing his bit and going away. That all has changed now. It is become story-oriented. So unless and until you become a part of the story, or you get to play a character of a person whose story is knitted with the story, you don’t get work. I am slightly jobless right now (laughs). I want to work, but the right kind of roles are not coming my way.

“I am seeking work regularly. I have an agent, a team looking out for scripts and plays. They let me know about it, and if I am required to go for an audition, I go for an audition. Things have changed over a period of time, but one needs to be patient. Since Covid, working principle has been disrupted. Now people are becoming more sharper and progressive. It’s become beautiful and I like the way we have to approach work now. I am waiting for people to call me. Also, I am sending out feelers that I am an actor looking for work. So, if there is a suitable role, then I’d love to do it. That’s the kind of approach we have,” Tiku concluded.
