Sridevi didn’t speak to Boney Kapoor for six months after he proposed: ‘You’re married with two kids, how can you talk to me like this?’
Boney Kapoor opened up about the difficult circumstances in which he proposed to Sridevi, and how it initially backfired on him.

Producer Boney Kapoor opened up about the complicated circumstances in which he proposed to actor Sridevi, who was also taken aback because he was married with two kids at the time. In an interview, Boney said that she didn’t speak to him for months, but eventually, they got married. They had two daughters, actors Janhvi and Khushi Kapoor, both of whom made their debuts after Sridevi’s passing in 2018. In an interview, the producer spoke about the uncomfortable period in his life, and said that he was always forthright with his first wife, Mona Shourie.
In a chat with ABP Live, he said, “I was in love with her, I am in love with her, and I will be in love with her till my dying day. It took me four-five-six years to convince her. When I proposed to her, she didn’t speak to me for six months. She said, ‘You’re married with two kids, how can you talk to me like this?’ But I said what was in my heart, and fortune favoured me.”
Boney also spoke about how long-term relationships tend to evolve over time. “Understanding between a couple should increase with every passing year. Lovey-dovey relationships without any differences don’t last long. Nobody’s perfect. I wasn’t perfect. I was already married when… But I never hid things. (Mona) remained my friend right till the end. It’s always better to be honest to your partner, and similarly, you also have to be honest to your children. I am my children’s friend, I am my children’s mother, I am my children’s father,” he said.
Boney said that it is only after seven years that people begin to reveal who they really are. “Relationships succeed only when you’re transparent with your partner, and your children. There should be no pretentions,” he said.

Recently, in an interview with Raj Shamani, Boney’s son, Arjun Kapoor, looked back on the ‘traumatic’ period of his life when Boney and Mona separated. “My parents split up when I was 10 years old. That’s something that, at that point, didn’t feel that it would shape me and change the course of my entirely because I was dealing with it in real time. But when I look back, there are a lot of things that… For example, my father was busy making two big films when that was happening. He was making Prem and Roop Ki Rani Choro Ka Raja. He was under a lot of pressure to complete those films and release them. So, we never had a normal father-son relationship where he came to school to pick me up or drop me. It’s not that he didn’t try, but I never had that, and then the slip happened also. That is slightly traumatic when you look back and retrospect,” he said.
