Shahid Kapoor says he’s ‘upset’ that people assume dad Pankaj Kapur helped him in his career: ‘Didn’t even live with him, was raised by single mom’
Shahid Kapoor spoke about growing up with his mother Neliima Azeem, and said that he never asked father Pankaj Kapur for any help when he started out in films.

Actor Shahid Kapoor has always been reticent about revealing too much about his youth and his personal life, and he said in a recent interview that he prefers keeping some things private, such as what it was like to grow up with his mother Neliima Azeem after she separated from his father, Pankaj Kapur.
In an interview with Bollywood Bubble, Shahid described Neliima as a ‘single mother’, and said that she raised him and half-brother Ishaan Khatter by herself. Neliima was married to Pankaj Kapur from 1979 to 1984, she later tied the knot with Rajesh Khattar, with whom she was married from 1990 to 2001. Shahid was asked about the pride that his mother feels for him, and how he began providing for the family from a young age.
He said, “It’s sweet of her. Mothers are like that, they’ll always say the best things about their children. She’s a single parent, and me and Ishaan are brought up by her. We can never repay what parents do for us. She’s always been so positive and so loving, she’s always been a trooper for me and Ishaan… I don’t like to talk about those things, she’s saying it as a matter of pride, but those are very private things. I don’t think everything needs to be shared. Jitna hai woh hai, she’s there for me, we’re all there for each other, it’s no big deal.”
Shahid did, however, admit that he was bothered when people used to think of him as a product of nepotism when he started out in the film industry two decades ago. “I’m one of those self-made guys who people think, because his papa was an actor, got it easier. And I get very upset about that, because I’m like, ‘Hey, guys, you don’t know my struggle’. Just because my father is Pankaj Kapur doesn’t mean I had it easy, because actually I didn’t even live with him, I lived with my mom. And he’s also a very proud man, he would never (offer to call someone on my behalf). And I was too proud to ask him for any support ever. In fact, I never even brought it up with him, neither did he ask me. It just never came up,” he said.
Shahid will next be seen in the action film Bloody Daddy, which will be released for free on JioCinema next week. He was last seen in the Prime Video series Farzi.
