Amitabh Bachchan was nervous while shooting KANK, embarrassed Shah Rukh Khan questioned Karan Johar: ‘What is this nonsense?’
The set of Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna was an awkward place, with everyone from Shah Rukh Khan to Amitabh Bachchan expressing concern to Karan Johar about what he was making them do.

Filmmaker Karan Johar took a big risk with Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, which was a departure from his usual kind of film. Released in 2006, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna featured an all-star cast comprising of Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Rani Mukerji, Preity Zinta, Abhishek Bachchan and Amitabh Bachchan. And most of them were awkward while making the film, mainly because of its subject matter, which dealt with infidelity.
In his autobiography An Unsuitable Boy, Karan recalled the mood on set, and revealed that only one person was relaxed about the experience: Abhishek. Both Preity and Rani had concerns about their characters, and would often ask Karan questions. While Preity wanted to know why her character’s husband doesn’t love her anymore, Rani wanted a scene that would ‘justify’ her character’s actions in the film. “Everyone was awkward, barring Abhishek who had this completely white character,” Karan wrote.
Narrating an incident, he continued, “Shah Rukh would be awkward. I’d never asked Shah Rukh for more than a second take in my entire career; he’s never taken more than two takes for anything. He and I have this synergy, we just get what we want. But there was one scene where he’s on the phone, and Preity Zinta asks, ‘Dev, who are you talking to?’ And he says, ‘I am just coming.’ That’s it. But he couldn’t do that scene. He was just so embarrassed. He said, ‘I can’t do this. What is this nonsense!’”
Even Amitabh Bachchan was nervous about the film, and what his character was being made to do. But, Karan said, at least he had a sense of humour about it. “Mr Bachchan would say, ‘Karan, what are you making? What is going to happen? What are you doing to me?’ And I’d say, ‘Amit uncle, I am casting you as a slightly overtly sexual older man.’ Then he’d laugh and say, ‘You have come to the right person.’ He has a great sense of humour and he was loving it. He loved his clothes. He loved the flamboyance of playing Sexy Sam.”
Karan revealed that Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna is perhaps the only film of his that he would want to go back and change, despite the fact that he even held off on Aditya Chopra’s suggestions for the ending and went with his gut. “The whole film was too much for this country,” he wrote, adding that people told him that he’d ‘lost his marbles’ after losing his father, and that he was dishonoring the legacy of Dharma Productions. Despite this, the film was a box office hit.
