Rohit Shetty reveals why Ranveer Singh-Deepika Padukone didn’t have scenes together in Singham Again: ‘It could have gone wrong’

Rohit Shetty shared as his characters in the film were a reflection of characters from the Hindu epic Ramayana, he didn't want to add any scene that would have hurt sentiments.

Rohit Shetty returned with a bang after his 2022 flop Cirkus. The director’s Singham Again, the third installment in the Singham franchise and fifth in his cop universe, had one of the biggest star cast. Rohit Shetty’s film featured several A-listers including Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh, Kareena Kapoor, Arjun Kapoor, and Tiger Shroff. The film, released on Diwali, has fared well at the box office and has managed to cross the Rs 200 crore mark in India in ten days.

The film also marked the sixth collaboration between real life couple and new parents in town Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone after Ram Leela, Bajirao Mastani, Padmavat, 83, and Cirkus (where she appeared in a special song). However, the two didn’t have any scene together in the cop drama. Recently, in an interview with SHOWSHA, Rohit Shetty revealed it was a conscious decision to avoid a banter between the real-life couple on screen.

He said, “I would have love to do that… but, because we were dealing with Ranveer as Lord Hanuman’s character… he was a reflection of Hanuman Ji’s character and it would have gone wrong for us. So, we were worried about that.” He explained, “Everyone on the set questioned that if we can have a banter between Akshay Kumar and Ranveer, why can’t we also have a banter between Ranveer and Deepika? Could have done in a better way, but it was a conscious decision.”

The film director then shared, “A lot of things were a conscious decision that, ‘No, we can’t do this or no, we cannot say this line.’ Otherwise, definitely there would have been a scene between them. But, could have gone wrong. And that’s something I can’t compromise on.”

Singham Again, which released on Diwali (November 1), connected its characters to the popular characters of the Indian epic Ramayana. Ajay Devgn and Kareena Kapoor were shown as reflections of Lord Ram and Goddess Sita. Akshay Kumar was shown as Jatayu, Ranveer as a reflection of Lord Hanuman, and Arjun Kapoor, who abducts Kareena in the film, as Ravana. To play it safe, the makers also avoided including songs in the film, in order to avoid hurting people’s religious sentiments.

Before the release of the film, several scenes were modified on CBFC’s order. About 7.12 minutes of footage were removed from the film. Reportedly, the censor board also made the makers suitably modify a 23-second-long scene of Singham touching the feet of Lord Ram. The team was also asked to fully delete a 16-second-long scene showing Raavan grabbing, pulling and pushing Sita to add more drama to the visual. Several other modifications around Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor’s characters were done before the movie getting a U/A certificate.
