Back in 2007, Ram Gopal Varma attempted what countless filmmakers dared not touch — make an unofficial remake of Ramesh Sippy’s 1975 seminal masala movie Sholay. The title even went from Aag to Ram Gopal Varma ki Aag after Sippy Films protested against the unauthorized adaptation. As many feared, the film turned out to be one of the biggest disasters in the history of Hindi cinema.
Sushant Singh, who played Tambe, inspired from Gabbar’s popular sidekick Sambha (played by Mac Mohan), recently opened up on his experience of shooting Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag. “There’s a word in Urdu — bevakoof (foolish). We didn’t know whether we were fooling the audience or getting fooled ourselves,” he said.
But the actor recalled how filming the movie felt the complete opposite. “While shooting, it felt like a masterpiece. Everything was very professional. The whole set was covered so that anyone’s look doesn’t get leaked to the press stationed outside,” he said on the podcast Digital Commentary.
Sushant Singh was all praise for how Gabbar (played by Amitabh Bachchan) was envisioned. From the camera movements inside his den to Bachchan’s posture, being covered by a rug and sipping on piping hot coffee in a steel tumbler, everything looked quite cinematic. Even Bachchan’s grasp on his character, from the coughing to the dragging of his feet, each move was bang on.
“But it was a disaster. I think while editing, even Ramu ji would’ve realized ki ismei toh lag gayi (that this has gone down the drain),” concluded Sushant.
Ram Gopal Varma ki Aag was produced by Varma’s production house RGV Film Factory. He was even fined a heavy sum of $1 million by Delhi High Court for his “deliberate act” of copyright infringement for the usage of characters like Gabbar.
Ram Gopal Varma ki Aag starred Amitabh Bachchan as Babban Singh, inspired from Gabbar (originally played by Amjad Khan), Mohanlal as Narsimha, inspired from Thakur (Sanjeev Kumar), Ajay Devgn as Heerendra, inspired from Jai (Amitabh Bachchan), JD Chakravarthy as Subbu, inspired from Veeru (Dharmendra), Sushmita Sen as Durga, inspired from Radha (Jaya Bachchan), Nisha Kothari as Ghunroo, inspired from Basanti (Hema Malini), and Rajpal Yadav as Ramabhai, inspired from Soorma Bhopali (Jagdeep). The film even recreated the popular song “Mehbooba Mehbooba”, which originally featured Helen and Jalal Agha. The recreated version featured Urmila Matondkar and Abhishek Bachchan.

In a recent interview with SCREEN, Ramesh Sippy opened up on whether Sholay should not be touched after what happened with Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag. “In today’s world, you can’t control all that. Ultimately, the lure of money takes over. If Sholay goes into business hands, they will use it to maximum exploitation. So far, it hasn’t happened. If it does happen, it should be done in the right way. That’s all I can hope for,” he said.
