Rajkumar Santoshi said that it is a misconception that Salman Khan-Aamir Khan-starrer Andaz Apna Apna flopped.

Andaz Apna Apna might get a sequel 30 years after its releaseAndaz Apna Apna might get a sequel 30 years after its release.

Director Rajkumar Santoshi, who is known for making films like Damini, Khakee, The Legend of Bhagat Singh among others, recently spoke about Andaz Apna Apna starring Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Raveena Tandon, Karisma Kapoor among others. Santoshi hinted that he is writing another comedy with the working title Adaa Apni Apni but did not give a definitive response when asked if it was a sequel. He also said that it was a misconception that Andaz Apna Apna flopped when it released.

Talking to Doordarshan, Santoshi said, “They just say that it flopped after release. People were just not aware about it. The publicity wasn’t done in a proper way and people were not aware that this was a comedy. People thought this would be a love story like Qayamat Se Qayamt Tak or Dil or Maine Pyar Kiya. The distributors were new so they didn’t release it properly. At the time of the release, Aamir, Salman and me, the three of us were not in the city so there was no premiere or anything. So maybe because of that, the film didn’t get a strong response upon release. People who watched it, they were loving it.”

He added that the film grew with word of mouth but by the time it started growing, theatres were starting to take it off. “I wouldn’t use harsh words like it was a flop, it wasn’t a flop. It didn’t get the kind of response what we expected. Later, people started liking it. It grew with word of mouth and as it was growing with publicity, it was taken off the theatres because the distributors didn’t have faith in it. They thought it won’t work,” he said.

Santoshi then revealed that he is writing a similar comedy with a working title Adaa Apni Apni. “I am writing a comedy in Andaz Apna Apna’s style. This is the kind of experiment that you have to do, you don’t always know how it will turn out but I can assure that it will be entertaining,” he said and added, “The working title of the new film is Adaa Apni Apni.” When asked if it will be a sequel, he said, “Too early to say. Let’s see.”
