R Madhavan, who will soon appear in Netflix’s The Railway Men, revealed his approach to signing projects at this stage in his career. The actor said that he is in the fortunate position to pick and choose what he wants to do, especially after ‘pioneering’ the streaming series boom in India.

In an interview with Film Companion, Madhavan also revealed the ‘tricks’ that he uses on directors, and said that he insists on doing screen tests, not to prove he’s fit for the role, but to slyly confirm if the directors know what they’re doing. He also said that he occasionally tries to catch his directors off guard by making ‘wrong’ suggestions, and seeing if they push back or roll over.

R Madhavan said, “I don’t demarcate between a debutante director or an experienced one, because a good subject is so difficult to come by. The only thing you want to see is the preparedness of the set and the intent behind the project, and on this one, every box was ticked… We always try to test the directors to see if they’re in line with what they’re saying, so we’ll give some wrong suggestions and he (director Shiv Rawail) was spot on.”

The actor continued, “In fact, I play a trick with my directors as well. I insist on a screen test, and it’s with the belief that they want to see if I fit the character. More importantly, I’m checking out whether they’re good enough directors for me to… I’m actually auditioning them.”

Produced by YRF, The Railway Men is a four-episode series that tells the story of four regular men who rise to the occasion during the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy. While Madhavan, Kay Kay Menon and Babil Khan play railway employees, Divyenndu plays a criminal known as the Express Bandit, who finds himself in Bhopal during the tragedy. The show will be released on Netflix on Saturday.
