Priyanka Chopra opens Jio MAMI Film Festival with a speech; Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan attend Buckingham Murders premiere
At the opening night of the Jio MAMI Film Festival, Priyanka Chopra acknowledged the "pivotal role of women in front of the camera and behind." Kareena Kapoor Khan and Saif Ali Khan attended the premiere of The Buckingham Murders, directed by Hansal Mehta.

Priyanka Chopra, the chairperson of the Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival, opened the prestigious event with a speech celebrating cinema. It was a joyous moment for the Mumbai film fraternity to return to MAMI, which was forced to go online during the pandemic.
She also championed the role of women off and on screen, as she said, “We would like to acknowledge the pivotal role of women in front of the camera and behind it – we have some of the most amazing women, some of them here tonight, whose contribution to cinema is unparalleled.” After delivering her opening speech, Priyanka presented the Excellence in Cinema Award (International) to Italian film director Luca Guadagnino.

PeeCee opted for a white Tony Ward gown for the special evening as she walked the festival’s red carpet. The ceremony took place at the Grand Theatre at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC). She was joined at the opening by actors Kareena Kapoor Khan, Karisma Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Sonam Kapoor, Bhumi Pednekar, filmmaker Karan Johar, among others.

Kareena Kapoor Khan walked the red carpet as her film The Buckingham Murders, directed by Hansal Mehta, premiered at the festival’s opening night. Sunny Leone also walked the red carpet; her film Kennedy, directed by Anurag Kashyap will be screened at the festival on Saturday.
The evening also saw Kamal Haasan presenting the Excellence in Cinema Award (South Asia) to director-producer Mani Ratnam.The two south Indian film stalwarts also announced their first collaboration in over 36 years. They last worked together on the gangster drama Nayakan (1987). KH 234 will be produced under Haasan’s Raaj Kamal Films International and Ratnam’s Madras Talkies. AR Rahman and cinematographer Ravi K Chandran are also attached to the film.
Over 250 films will be screened at the ongoing Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival, which will conclude on November 5.
