Veteran actor Nana Patekar recently revealed that he was a part of the Kargil War, an aspect of his life that is rarely spoken about. The actor had memorably featured in the 1991 film Prahaar as Major Pratap Chauhan, but his connection with the Indian Army went beyond the big screen.

In an interview with The Lalllantop, Nana Patekar was asked about his time at the 1999 Kargil war between India and Pakistan. “Eventually I was a member of the Quick Reaction Team. It is one of the most elite forces. Itna sa toh kuch hum kar sakte hai desh ke liye (At least we can do this for the country),” he says in the promo of the episode.

According to an India Today report dated August 1999, the 73-year-old actor lived with the soldiers “for over a fortnight”, moving from post to post as “unofficial cheerleader of sorts.” The report had claimed that Nana Patekar had undergone intense training with the Maratha Light Infantry for Prahaar, which he also directed. The actor had also opened up about his time in the Kargil war and said, “Our greatest weapon is not the Bofors, nor the AK, but our jawans.”

In the new interview promo, the actor was also asked if he has ever thought of joining a political party. “I can’t be a part of it, because I am blunt, I say what I want to. Even this time I was asked but if I call the party chief crazy, he might oust me from the party.”

On the work front, the actor featured in last year’s Vivek Agnihotri directed drama The Vaccine War and was also seen in the Marathi film Ole Aale, which was a hit at the box office.
