Mushtaq Khan reveals that Aamir Khan used to help everyone on set. (Photo: IMDb)Aamir Khan marked his debut as the main lead in his uncle Nasir Hussain’s 1988 film Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. The movie also featured veteran actor Makarand Deshpande, who had previously played lead roles in various theater productions where Aamir Khan worked backstage. When the actor learnt that Aamir was playing the lead role in the film, he laughed very hard.
Now, in a new interview with Kunickaa Sadanand, Makarand shared the reason behind his laugh. He said the laugh was not to look down upon Aamir but out of surprise, because the Dangal actor mostly stayed lowkey.
Makarand Deshpande shared, “Aamir was working backstage when he was chosen to play the lead in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. At that time, I used to do lead roles (in theatre plays). Not that we looked down upon him. So when I went to meet Naseer Hussain sahab, I met him and all that. When I came out from there, I saw Aamir. I asked him, ‘Hey, what are you doing here?’ He said, ‘I am doing a role in the film.’ I was like, ‘Oh, what role?’. He said, ‘I am the hero.’ I laughed at his face.”
Makarand continued, “I laughed so hard and asked him, ‘You are the hero?’ The laugh was not to put him down, it was just that he was so sincere that it never occurred to me that he would become a hero.”
Kunickaa Sadanand, who previously worked with Aamir Khan, shared an incident from the sets of Baazi to highlight his dedication to his craft.
She shared, “I did a film called Baazi with him. Even on that set, he would always want to learn new things to better his skills. We were rehearsing for a scene on the road. There was a traffic jam and we had to rehearse it about 15 times, because Aamir was insisting on it. He is so perfect.”
Previously, actor Sujata Mehta had also spoken about Aamir Khan’s theater days, recalling how he would serve water to the audience during her play Chitkar. “Aamir Khan was getting trained when I was doing shows in theatre. He has worked backstage and has even served water to people. He got trained from the scratch. He has reached the top from scratch”, said Sujata in an interview with Hindi Rush.
