They say comedy is serious business, and 2025 has definitely been a year when stand-up comedians understood that it is more than just an average serious business, but one with violent repercussions, and legal ramifications. In the wake of comedian Kunal Kamra’s satirical comedy becoming national news after some found one of the jokes involving Maharashtra’s Deputy CM Eknath Shinde to be offensive, the comic has been on the receiving end of multiple cases.

In fact, with Kunal facing multiple charges, and warrants, he also pointed out how the cops are turning up at his old residence in Maharashtra. The comedian, who is living in Pondicherry now, took to social media to succinctly call out everything that unfolded after his video, ‘Naya Bharat’ was made live on YouTube.

In a post that has since become viral, Kunal shared a five-point list titled, ‘How to Kill an Artist: A Step-by-Step Guide’ and it was a recollection of what happened, especially to the audience of that show, and the location where he recorded the shoot. In fact, his comment about Eknath Shinde’s political moves during the recent elections, resulted in Shiv Sainiks vandalising the venue. While the stand-up comic faces three FIRs because of the comic routine, the attackers were out on bail a few hours after being arrested.

Nevertheless, here are the points that were made in the list.

1) Outrage – just enough for brands to stop commissioning their work.

2) Outrage more – until private and corporate gigs dry up

3) Outrage louder -so big venues won’t take risk.

4) Outrage violently – until even the smallest spaces shut their doors

5) Summon their audience for questioning – turning art into a crime scene

Kunal, who has made a name for himself by addressing pertinent themes with his brand of comedy, also pointed out that under such circumstances and pressure, artists have only two choices — Sell their soul and become a dollar puppet or wither in silence. “This isn’t just a playbook, it’s a political weapon. A silencing machine,” he wrote.
