Kunaal Roy Kapur believes it’s going to be scary to compete with AI, Mona Singh says there’s no turning back: ‘We need to tame the beast’
Kunaal Roy Kapur noted that numerous AI-generated shows are already in production, and soon, they could pose a real threat to mainstream film production and traditional storytelling.
Mona Singh said that there is no going back from AI’s divergence with cinema.Recently, actors Kunaal Roy Kapur and Mona Singh collaborated on the show Thode Door Thode Paas, now streaming on ZEE5, where they portray a family embarking on a complete digital detox, saying goodbye to screens to strengthen their familial bonds. As a show that explores the relationship between technology and humans, it was only fitting to get their thoughts on the growing influence of AI in storytelling. Kunaal shared his perspective in an exclusive conversation with SCREEN, expressing both concern and curiosity about AI’s role in filmmaking.
The actor said, “It is going to be scary because we’re going to have one more competitor in that sense. In any case, you know, there are so many young creators out there who already have access to an audience, and everyone’s already glued to their phones with that content as well. Because everyone likes two-minute videos, 30-second videos, a one-minute joke. And people are glued to that. They don’t even watch shows or films. There are so many young kids who don’t watch full movies. It’s just easier to access this hyper-curated feed that you have. And AI is going to add to that, because now you have content creators with AI tools who are generating stuff that is hyper-curated for your brain. So it’s going to be a lot to compete against.”
He went on to highlight the potential challenges AI-generated content could pose to mainstream storytelling. “This is year one. We’re going to be saying in six months, one year’s time, it’s all going to change. And studios are going to be able to say, ‘We want a show on this,’ and that’s it, it’s done, within a few weeks. So that’s a whole wipe-out of, like, everybody down the line. Thousands of people. We are not prepared. We are not ready. So yeah, we need to brace for impact, let’s put it that way.”

Listening to Kunaal Roy Kapur, Mona Singh chimed in: “See there is no turning back now. We have to tame the beast.”
Earlier in the conversation, she also reflected on the heartbreak she experienced after the failure of Laal Singh Chaddha. Recalling an emotional moment on the day of its release, she said, “We did meet on the day of the release. Advait was there, we had gone to Aamir’s house. And I was crying, of course, I always begin to weep in such moments. And it’s for the good only, as it loosens up the heart, and cleanses your mind with all the worries. So I cried, and he told me ‘This is what the movie business is about, you get just one Friday to prove yourself.’ I was really like this is not done. That one Friday is the only day when people decide whether it’s good and bad, that’s so much pressure for anyone to take. That’s why I enjoy OTT now, people can watch your stuff whenever you want.”
