Abhishek Chaubey, the director of films like Ishqiya and Udta Punjab, can compromise with how his characters look, but not the acting. He is a strong believer of the dictum – ‘If the acting is right, it covers for the character’s appearance.’ In a recent interview, Chaubey gave an example about his casting process and also shared how Kareena Kapoor and Diljit Dosanjh would never sit on set with the actress even refusing to put her makeup on for the film.

In an interview with Mashable India, the filmmaker said, “When we had conceived the character of Sartaj in Udta Punjab, he was supposed to be this mountain of a man. A proper 6 feet guy with heavy voice. Typical Punjabi look. But when we did the casting, we cast Diljit Dosanjh, who looked nothing like we imagined for the character. But, he was a great actor. He is an actual Sardar.”

Abhishek Chaubey also shared his experience of working with Kareena Kapoor in Udta Punjab. After seeing a BTS photo of himself with the actor, the filmmaker recalled, “Kareena gives this expression that she doesn’t care about what you are saying, but that’s not true. She actually listens very carefully.”

“And I will tell you something very interesting about Diljit and Kareena. They never sat on set. Usually, what happens after an actor gives his or her shot, they either return to their vanity or sit on the back with a book or so, but these two would never sit. These two would just follow me everywhere I go. Kareena is a superstar and yet she would always stand behind me and so did Diljit Dosanjh. I would ask him to sit, but he never would. I would shoot in various location in the village and Kareena would always stand and watch,” he added.

Abhishek Chaubey further praised Kareena Kapoor, saying she “knows how to mould herself” as per the requirement of the project.

The filmmaker said, “There is this great thing about Kareena. She is a true blue industry kid and she has an instinctive understanding of the kind of film and the performance that is expected of her. There is no lack of skill and craft. Whether it is a David Dhawan film or a Govind Nihalani film, she knows how to mould herself. She knew what kind of film we were making. She was aware of the kind of pitch that was needed for the performance. She wouldn’t put on makeup. I used to request her ‘thoda makeup karlo’, but she wouldn’t. She was amazing.”

After Trump doubles tariff, India’s strategy: Remain quiet, don’t give in, wait it out
Explained2 min ago

US President Donald Trump may have doubled the tariffs on India to 50 per cent, but New Delhi is not alarmed or unduly perturbed; rather the government seems to be prepared to wait it out for the next few weeks or more — deal with his increasing frustration by remaining calm.

It has taken an unequivocal call that Trump cannot tell India not to trade with Russia or distance itself from BRICS.
