‘Wahiyat’: Mika Singh comments on Ranveer Allahbadia-India’s Got Latent row; Javed Akhtar-Aamir Khan slam vulgar comedy in old clip

While netizens are divided on Ranveer Allahabadia and India's Got Latent row, Aamir Khan and Javed Akhtar's old videos where they shared their opinions on vulgar and cheap comedy have gone viral.

The controversy surrounding Ranveer Allahbadia’s inappropriate comment on Samay Raina’s show India’s Got Latent has led to FIRs being filed against them and immense backlash on social media. While netizens are divided on whether such harsh measures against the YouTubers are necessary, several videos of celebrities sharing their opinions on vulgar and cheap comedy have gone viral.

Allahbadia, who won an award from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and has interviewed actors, sportspersons and actors, asked a question to a contestant that melds with ‘anything-goes’ mood of India’s Got Latent: “Would you rather watch your parents have sex every day for the rest of your life or join in once to stop it forever?” It soon snowballed into a controversy with political parties commenting on it, the podcaster losing followers and even brands and his guests opting out of his show.

In an old clip, Javed Akhtar and Aamir Khan discussed the use of abusive language in comedy, while Varun Dhawan revealed that he had rejected an offer to appear on India’s Got Latent. Singer Mika Singh also shared a video comparing the controversy to instances where singers like Diljit Dosanjh faced criticism from the government for singing about alcohol, while comedians faced no consequences for using abusive language.

Javed Akhtar’s Take on Abusive Language in Comedy

Last year, during a conversation with comedians Sapan Verma, Biswa Kalyan Rath, and Shreeja Chaturvedi on an episode of Chill Sesh, Javed Akhtar compared the use of abusive language in comedy to eating chilies. He explained, “I will tell you something. Odisha, Bihar and Mexico, anywhere in the world where there is poverty, people eat lots of chilli because the food is bland. So just to get some taste, they eat chilli. Gaali is the chilli of language. If you can speak good language and if you are witty enough, you don’t need this chilli. If the conversation is bland, you will put some gaalis in it.”

Varun Dhawan on Rejecting India’s Got Latent

In an earlier interaction with Ranveer Allahbadia on his podcast, Varun spoke about Samay Raina’s brand of comedy and why it appeals to today’s youth. The actor, however, admitted to turning down an offer to appear on Samay’s show due to concerns about getting canceled. He said, “He asked me to be on the show, and honestly, I would thrive on the show. I could get cancelled, but I feel his show could get affected negatively. The more eyeballs you get with that type of humour, though he isn’t scared of all that, sometimes it becomes a crossfire.”

When Ranveer pushed him to reconsider, Varun responded, “I would do it in a heartbeat. I’m not worried for myself, but I think the teams I work with might have concerns. I’d have to do it when I’m not promoting something because it will definitely be a crossfire.”

Aamir Khan’s Views on Offensive Comedy

Like Javed Akhtar, Aamir Khan has also expressed his disapproval of abusive language in comedy. During a media interaction in 2015, the PK star reflected on the 2015 AIB Roast, a controversy that now mirrors the India’s Got Latent backlash. His statement has resurfaced online, “If you think you can impress me by saying 25 abuses than I have passed that age. I am not a kid that will laugh listening to abuses. I am way past that age. I am not 14 anymore that I laugh listening to abuses. I am not impressed by bad language. If you want to impress me, try making me laugh without insulting anyone. I will enjoy it then.”

Mika Singh’s Comparison to Diljit Dosanjh Controversy

On Wednesday, singer Mika Singh also shared his views on the controversy. He said, “Maine bhi ye episode dekha hain. Bohot hi wahiyaat, bohot it ajeebo kisam ke gaaliyan de rahe hain. Kuch bhi bol rahe hain. I am sure unke fans kafi honge. Ya toh ye show sirf unke liye hi ho jinko woh show pasand ho (I have also seen the episode. It is horrible, filled with such nasty abuses. I am sure he must have a lot of fans. The show must then be for only those who like these content).”

Mika further compared the India’s Got Latent controversy to the bans imposed on Diljit Dosanjh during his recent Dil-luminati tour, where state governments restricted him from singing songs about alcohol and violence. Expressing his frustration, he said, “Inko rok lagane ke liye koi na koi chahiye… Mujhe gussa hota hain jab mera ya Diljit Dosanjh ka koi show hota hain… bohot saare desh ke raksha karne ke liye log aa jaate hain. Sharab pe gaana mat gaao public show mein ye mat karo woh mat karo… Tum logo ko ye gadhe log nazar nahi aate? Kya tumhara farz nahi banta jaise singers ko ya celebrities ko yu notice bhej dete ho… toh ap in gadho ko nahi rok sakte? Jo itni time se bakwas kar rahe hein? Ap logo ka ye farz banta hain (There should be someone to stop these films. I feel angry when there is a show of a big singer like Diljit Dosanjh, and there people come and pull all kinds of notices on him. Isn’t it your responsibility to notice these idiots also? These fools have been talking nonsense for so long. This is your duty too).”
