Dev Anand called Suraiya ‘coward’ for not marrying him; she turned down his wedding proposal due to this condition

Legendary Bollywood actor Suraiya, who passed away 20 years ago on January 31, was in love with Dev Anand during her heydays. But she refused to marry him as he put a condition for marrying her.

The yesteryear Bollywood diva Suraiya had a short yet remarkable career in the films. Besides her work, her whirlwind romance with actor Dev Anand remained one of the most talked-about aspects of her life. The two stars worked together in seven films, including Vidya (1948), Jeet (1949), Shair (1949), Afsar (1950), Nili (1950), Do Sitare (1951) and Sanam (1951). While Suraiya was head over heels in love with Dev Anand, she denied his marriage proposal for a couple of reasons.

In a 1972 interview with Stardust, Suraiya detailed her love story with Dev. They romanced away from the prying eyes of her strict maternal grandmother. She shared that since they couldn’t meet at film studios since her grandmother always accompanied her, the two talked over the phone every Friday. “Every Friday of the week, he rang me up at night. I made sure to be hovering near the phone at the appointed time,” said Suraiya, who passed away on January 31, 2004.

However, the actor-singer refused the marriage proposal of the Guide actor. She revealed that he offered to get married in court and tried to convince her, “The only religion is love. Love is everything”. When she feared objection from her grandmother over their inter-caste relationship, he assured, “I can give you love, respect and security and you can give me love, respect and inspiration.”

But he also mentioned that she should give up her career after marriage. Dev Anand’s condition rang a bell in Suraiya’s head as she was not ready to give up on a successful career. She was also afraid of her grandmother who had threatened her, “I’ll have you both arrested if you marry.” So, she turned down the marriage proposal.

“The reasons were many. But the most important was that though I was sure of Dev’s love, I was unsure of myself. I was confused. When I refused to marry Dev, he called me a coward. Maybe I was one. I admit I was not absolutely sure of. Perhaps it was a folly, perhaps a mistake or perhaps, destiny?” Suraiya told Stardust.
