‘Sridevi lit her mother’s pyre’: Boney Kapoor says late wife was ‘more religious’ than him
Boney Kapoor recently opened up about his late wife and Bollywood actor Sridevi's religious side, revealing that he started believing more in it because of her.

Film producer Boney Kapoor, who is currently busy promoting his upcoming movie Maidaan, has often poured his heart out while speaking about Sridevi’s sudden and tragic demise and has, since then, openly discussed his relationship with the late actor. The producer-actor, recently spoke about Sridevi’s religious and spiritual nature, revealing that her devotion had a profound impact on his own beliefs. During a conversation with Zoom, he said, “Sridevi was more religious than I was. I started believing more in it because of her.”
He confessed that it was, indeed, through her influence that he began to explore spirituality more fully. Beyond her dedication to faith, Kapoor also touched upon Sridevi’s unique personality, highlighting her penchant for the unconventional. He shared an anecdote that highlighted this ‘unusual’ aspect of her character.

“Sridevi did unusual roles and unusual things. She lit the fire on the pyre when her mother passed away,” he recalled. Lighting the funeral pyre is a traditionally male role in some cultures. Interestingly, their daughter Janhvi Kapoor also has a religious side and is often seen visiting the Tirupati Balaji Temple. She recently completed her 50th visit to the temple on the occasion of her birthday.
Sridevi passed away in 2018 from an accidental drowning in a Dubai hotel bathtub while attending a family wedding. In 2023, Boney revealed that the actor used to experience blackouts due to her low-salt diets to “look good” and that she was following the same diet at the time of her death. “She often used to starve; she wanted to look good. She wanted to make sure she was in good shape, so that on-screen, she looked good. From the time she was married to me, she had blackouts on a couple of occasions, and the doctor kept on saying she had a low BP issue,” he was quoted as saying in an article in The New Indian.

Boney, who is gearing up for No Entry 2, revealed that while they tied the knot in June 1996, it wasn’t public knowledge until January 1997. This period of secrecy unfortunately opened them up to public scrutiny and negativity.
