Bollywood’s horror classic, Raaz, continues to resonate with audiences even today, thanks in part to its haunting music and the undeniable on-screen chemistry between leads Dino Morea and Bipasha Basu. The film catapulted Dino to stardom, transforming his career trajectory after a previous box-office dud, Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi. However, behind the sizzling romance on screen, a real-life drama, owing to Dino and Bipasha’s break-up, was also unfolding which led to difficulty in shooting the song, “Main Agar Saamne.”  The duo, who were in a high-profile relationship at the time, were on the brink of a breakup during the filming of Raaz. Their deteriorating relationship significantly impacted the mood on set, said Vikram Bhatt.

During a recent interview with News 18 Showsha, Vikram opened up about the challenges he faced during production. Recalling a particularly tense moment, he shared, “I remember a tragicom situation where we were shooting for their wedding song, Main Agar Saamne. There’s this line in the song – Apni Shaadi Ke Din Abb Nahi Door Hain – and it was during this scene that they were both fighting. I remember Bipasha crying and Dino unhappy.”

The irony of shooting a wedding song amidst their crumbling relationship created a surreal atmosphere. Vikram further revealed that the couple’s relationship completely fell apart shortly after the film’s release. Despite the turmoil, he maintained a professional distance, focusing on the project at hand.  “I told them said, ‘Guys, you can’t fight! We’re shooting a shaadi ka song. Why don’t you have ceasefire for two days?’ And then we had lunch together. But yes, their relationship was falling apart. I’m not the kind of person who goes into the personal lives of his actors. So, I don’t know what had transpired. Soon after Raaz, it completely fell apart,” he said

Interestingly, Bipasha wasn’t the original choice for the female lead. Lisa Ray was initially cast but had to drop out due to personal reasons. It was Dino who suggested his girlfriend, Bipasha, for the role.  “Dino was someone who Mukesh (Bhatt; producer) ji had suggested. I remember editing Kasoor at that point in time and he came to meet me.  At that time, Bipasha and Dino were dating. He said to me, ‘Why don’t you meet Bipasha? She might be good for the film.’ Back then, she was also doing a film called Ajnabee with Abbas-Mustan and it was written by a senior colleague of mine, Robin Bhatt. I called him up and asked him about her and he told me that she’s really good. I narrated the script of Raaz to her and she came onboard,” he shared.

Vikram revealed that before starring in Raaz, Dino had worked in  Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi which didn’t do well. “He was obviously a good-looking boy who had a career in front of him. It was Lisa who was supposed to play Bipasha’s role and we did one schedule with her and Dino. Unfortunately, she had some personal issues because of which she couldn’t continue the shoot.” he added.
