Arjun Kapoor recalls being a good student before parents’ separation, quitting college to work on Kal Ho Naa Ho: ‘I felt like a misfit’
Arjun Kapoor opens up on dropping out of college to work as an assistant director on Kal Ho Naa Ho and how his decision was not well-received by his late mother, Mona Shourie Kapoor.

Actor Arjun Kapoor has opened up on dropping out of college to work as an assistant director on Kal Ho Naa Ho and how his decision was not well-received by his late mother, Mona Shourie Kapoor.
In an interaction with Mashable India, Arjun reminisced about how, after completing his 10th standard, he spent his summer holidays completely immersed in films. “I think I used cinema to get out of that phase after 10th,” he explained. It was during this period that he began assisting his father and later joined Kal Ho Naa Ho as an assistant director.
Recalling his first day in college, Arjun Kapoor described how he immediately felt out of place. “I came to college in shorts, and I realised I was a misfit there. I dressed in my oversized clothes and carried a school bag. I’ve deleted a lot of memories from those days. I bunked a lot of college. I failed in accounting but did well in other subjects,” The actor shared. He further reflected on his struggles during that time, adding, “Maybe subconsciously I didn’t fit in physically because, at that time, I was the most overweight I had ever been.”
Arjun also spoke about how his academic performance took a hit following his parents’ separation. “I was a very good student until my parents’ separation. Then, obviously, psychologically… it affected me. The idea was to take a break and come back to college, but my mother didn’t appreciate that I started working. It wasn’t that I left college without it bothering me. My father suggested I take a year off and see how I felt. I was privileged enough to make that choice. But I am here today because of that choice,” Arjun said.
On the professional front, Arjun Kapoor was last seen in Rohit Shetty’s cop drama Singham Again, where he played the antagonist Danger Lanka.
