Anurag Kashyap blasts ‘dishonest and morally corrupt’ Netflix bosses, says they only want to increase subscriptions in India: ‘Jealous of shows like Adolesence’

While Anurag Kashyap is in awe of the latest much-talked-about British crime drama series Adolescence, he also took the opportunity to expose the ‘hypocrisy’ and ‘lack of courage’ of Netflix’s top bosses in India. He called the Netflix India team ‘dishonest and morally corrupt’ and spoke about the zero possibility of making a show like Adolescence in India.

Anurag started his post by praising the makers of Adolescence and the film’s cast. “I am numb and envious and jealous that someone can go and make that,” he wrote. Anurag also lauded the makers’ ‘courage’ for not missing a single nuance in the film. “It’s better than any film or anything I’ve seen,” he wrote.

Anurag also took this opportunity to take a dig at Netflix’s CEO Ted Sarandos. Ted had praised Adolescence, writing on social media, “Every once and awhile one comes along that pushes into brand new territories, defies the limits of creativity and features career defining performances.”

Anurag called out Ted’s ‘hypocrisy’ and pointed out how the Netflix India team, which is ‘backed so strongly by the boss in LA,’ would never greenlight a show like Adolescence in India.”Netflix.in is a totally opposite shitshow . If they were pitched this, most probably they would have rejected it or turned it into a 90 minute film (that too seems like an impossibility because it doesn’t have an ending that is black and white),” he wrote.

Anurag also shared his personal experience with the streaming platform and wrote, “Having gone through twice with them post Sacred Games and dealing with total lack of empathy , courage and dumbness mixed with immense insecurity of the series head and the team that keeps getting fired. It frustrates me. How do we ever create something so powerful and honest with a bunch of most dishonest and morally corrupt @netflix.in backed so strongly by the boss in LA.”

Anurag also accused Netflix’s top bosses in LA of only focusing on increasing the subscription base in India rather than backing content that the Indian audience deserves. He wrote, “This hypocrisy of Ted and Bella vis a vis the indian market of 1.4 billion people , where there only interest is increase in subscriptions and nothing else.” He took example of the Netflix’s upcoming show Saare Jahan Se Acha, starring Prateik Gandhi, and how it has been shot twice and saw a change of directors to shed a light on the situation in Netflix India. “There was a time when Eric Barmack would reach out on Facebook to creat something with Netflix to now where they send you a shot show like “saare jahan se achcha “ – which wasn’t even written properly and half baked . Which by the way has already changed directors and been shot twice (inevitably).”

He ended his post on a hopeful note while expressing his envy over the freedom that makers in other countries enjoy compared to filmmakers in India. “It makes me frustrated, jealous of shows like Adolesence and envious and hopeless. I hope they learn from the reception of it and realise that all the best things indian netflix does is mostly either acquired (Delhi Crime, Black warrant) or the ones they least believed in (kohrra, trial by fire). Fingers crossed for a better future,” he concluded.
