Aanand L Rai’s ambitious space romantic drama Zero, starring Shah Rukh Khan, nosedived at the box office, but not their equation. The filmmaker says the years spent in making the 2018 film with the superstar were some of the most “brilliant years” of his life, where he learnt a lot from Shah Rukh.

Zero featured SRK as a vertically challenged man and was billed as the biggest release of the year. Arriving on Christmas 2018, Zero also starred Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif and opened to mixed revies, eventually bombing at the box office.

When asked if his equation with Shah Rukh Khan was affected by the performance of Zero, Aanand L Rai told Showsha that was never the case with the superstar, who doesn’t value his relationship with people based on the box office collections of his films.

Rai said, “No. Never with an actor, a star, a big man like Shah Rukh Khan. He is not all about just films, he is much more than that. Making Zero were the brilliant years of my life with Shah Rukh, because it is not just about filmmaking, it is understanding life.”

“That man taught us about life in those many years. If you ask me the takeaway, I learnt how to be a fighter from him. He is a great fighter, a magician at that. He knows how to bounce back, create a path for himself. The equation hasn’t changed. A person like Shah Rukh Khan will never change equation based on hits and flops,” he added.

Anand L Rai’s latest production is the Taapsee Pannu-Vikrant Massey starrer Phir Aayi Hasseen Dilruba, currently streaming on Netflix. After Zero, Rai made Akshay Kumar starrer Raksha Bandhan, which was also a flop. Up next, he has teamed up with Dhanush for Tere Ishq Mein. Shah Rukh Khan, meanwhile, will be next seen in The King, co-starring his daughter Suhana Khan.
