It doesn’t take much to get Amitabh Bachchan to share a personal anecdote on Kaun Banega Crorepati. Mostly, the questions that he asks contestants on the quiz show are enough of a prompt to get him to walk down memory lane and recall stories about his life and family. And that’s what happened on the latest episode of KBC, when a question about Mirza Ghalib somehow got Big B to remember his daughter-in-law, actor Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.
The episode featured rollover contestant Abhishek Garg, who was asked to name the poet associated with the Ballimaran locality of Old Delhi. He gave the correct answer, Mirza Ghalib, and won Rs 12.5 lakh. Amitabh was reminded of a lyric from the song “Kajra Re,” which referenced Ballimaran. Penned by Gulzar, the song was featured in the film Bunty Aur Babli, which starred Amitabh, his son Abhishek Bachchan, and Rani Mukerji. Aishwarya appeared in a guest role for a special dance number: “Kajra Re.”
On KBC, Amitabh said, “Usmein hum teeno the. Tab Aishwarya humari bahu nahi thi, ab ban gayi hai. Gaane me bahu thi, Abhishek the aur hum the. Uss gaane mein bol the (That song had all three of us. Aishwarya wasn’t my daughter-in-law then, but she is now. She was my daughter-in-law in the song. It had lyrics about Ballimaran).” Amitabh then requested the crew to play the song on the show.
Aishwarya and Abhishek got married in a very private ceremony in 2007. Their wedding was conducted within the Bachchan bungalow premises in the Juhu area of Mumbai. They welcomed daughter Aaradhya in the year 2011, amid intense media frenzy. While Aishwarya doesn’t work as often these days, Amitabh is highly prolific, and Abhishek has appeared in several films in the last couple of years, after taking some time off in the mid 2010s.
