Delhi AQI hits 401, government reinstates GRAP Stage III

The Delhi government has reinstated GRAP Stage III after previously lifting it, following a sharp rise in the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI). The AQI, which was 349 on December 12, 2025, at 4 PM, surged overnight to 401 by 10 AM on December 13, 2025. The worsening air quality is attributed to slow wind speed, a stable atmosphere, unfavourable weather conditions, and poor dispersal of pollutants.

Measures taken under GRAP Stage III

– Hybrid learning for students up to Class V
– Ban on construction activities
– NCR governments can take a decision on allowing public, municipal and private offices to work on 50 percent strength and the rest to work from home
– The Centre may similarly implement work-from-home arrangements for central government employees

Considering the prevailing air quality trend and to prevent further deterioration in the region, the CAQM GRAP Sub-Committee has decided to implement all actions under Stage III of the GRAP ‘Severe’ Air Quality (AQI ranging between 401-450) with immediate effect across the entire NCR. These actions are in addition to the measures under Stages I and II, which are already in force.

Furthermore, NCR Pollution Control Boards and other relevant agencies have been directed to escalate preventive measures to contain further deterioration of air quality in the region.
