‘Amitabh Bachchan put his reputation at stake and RGV Ki Aag became a laughing stock,’ says Ram Gopal Varma
Ram Gopal Varma said that Amitabh Bachchan put his reputation at stake for RGV Ki Aag but he failed the actor.

Director Ram Gopal Varma recently penned a heartfelt note after watching his modern-day classic film Satya for the first time since its release over 25 years ago. The filmmaker expressed his regret for not holding himself to a higher standard during his subsequent career. While RGV was one of the most popular filmmakers in the 1990s and early 2000s, having delivered films such as Rangeela, Satya, Kaun, Bhoot and a few others, he went through a big downfall when he started making films like RGV Ki Aag, a remake of the landmark film Sholay. In a recent interview, RGV looked back at his working relationship with Amitabh Bachchan, who worked with him on RGV Ki Aag, and said that he felt guilty for letting him down. He said that the film became a “laughing stock,” and Amitabh Bachchan had “his reputation at stake.”
In a chat with Galatta Plus, while discussing RGV Ki Aag, the director said that he realised that the film was going wrong two months before its release, but by then, it was already complete. He said that at the time, he believed that he had put more effort in Aag, as compared to even Sarkar, which also starred Amitabh Bachchan. RGV recalled how he got Bachchan on board and said that when he had the initial idea for the film, he discussed it with his team and one of the publicity artists made a picture imagining Bachchan in the role of the villain. That really impressed RGV and when he showed it to Bachchan, the actor was just as impressed.
“He might have said that because he will assume that I will know what I am doing, he is an actor at the end of the day. And also he trusts me because of Sarkar,” he said, and added, “He didn’t ask me too many questions, he just reacted to the picture and took it for granted that I know what I am doing.” RGV said that while he was making the film, he found himself more occupied with reinterpreting Sholay on a shot to shot basis, and the “emotion went out of my head.”
RGV said that the line, “cried in guilt for my betrayals of all those who trusted me due to Satya,” in his note, was in reference to all the artists an technicians who took his word because of his previous films. He said that Amitabh also trusted him because of their previous collaboration Sarkar. “Amitabh Bachchan put his reputation at stake because he agreed to do RGV Ki Aag and the fact that film became a laughing stock, the reason is me, not him,” he said and added, “I would feel guilty that I made him go through that.”
He continued, “Mr Bachchan, for example, many times he says no matter what, I will always work with Ramu because he sees the sincerity in me. When a film fails, people tend to think either the director has lost it or he is lazy or he didn’t work enough, all the negative traits they will think of where the film failed. But Mr Bachchan, because he is on the set, he has seen me working, he doesn’t think any of these are the reasons, which is the reason his respect for me as a filmmaker, it still remains because of that.”
Apart from Sarkar and RGV Ki Aag, Ram Gopal Varma and Amitabh Bachchan also worked together in Nishabd, Sarkar Raj, Rann, Sarkar 3.
