Alia Bhatt recently grabbed eyeballs internationally, as she turned an Indian princess, dressed in a Sabyasachi saree and arrived at Met Gala. The actor, in a candid interview with Harper Bazaar, discussed her approach to unwinding after demanding roles, tackling social media trolls and drawing inspiration from a range of Indian and international cultural icons. As the wife of fellow actor Ranbir Kapoor, she also shared insights into their relationship and how they navigate success and failure in the public eye.
In her marriage to Ranbir, Alia said she has learned to appreciate their differing approaches to dealing with failure and success. As an overthinker, she finds balance in Ranbir’s ability to shake off the dust and move forward quickly. “Ranbir and I handle things differently. It’s this difference that helps us support each other, providing balance when it’s needed the most. But both of us choose to focus on work with a lot of love and immense respect. We work like it is a part of our life — a very important one — but not the whole of our life,” she said. Alia and Ranbir tied the knot in April 2021 and are parents to Raha Kapoor.
Emphasising the importance of finding moments of normalcy, Alia revealed her strategies for switching off after playing challenging roles, such as watching light-hearted sitcoms and spending quality time with friends. Since becoming a mother, she has prioritised balancing her career with motherhood, ensuring her family remains at the forefront of her life. “I would hang out with friends, catch a movie, or just do something fun to clear my head. Now I feel the added need to limit bringing my work home because once you are a mom you are physically, emotionally, and mentally always a mom first,” she revealed.
Despite being considered one of the finest actors of her generation and delivering powerful performances, Alia isn’t untouched by social media trolling. When it comes to dealing with trolls, Alia said she focuses on positive feedback and constructive criticism while letting negativity “bounce off.” “I let my work do the talking. It’s about building a wall between me and the trolls, focusing on the good stuff, the constructive feedback, and letting the negativity just bounce off,” she answered.
As a person who draws inspiration from various influential women, Alia mentioned she admires Kate Winslet for her range and resilience, Taylor Swift for her heartfelt music, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan for her global success, Kareena Kapoor Khan for her iconic presence and Shreya Ghoshal for her mesmerising voice. The Raazi actor said, “I feel inspired by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan who chartered her own course and took her journey global when no one was even thinking about it. And, of course, Kareena Kapoor Khan who is iconic in every way, and Shreya Ghoshal whose voice just elevates every word and rhythm given to her. These women embrace their journeys with such élan and ease — that authenticity is what I aim to bring to my roles.”
